Two consumers lodged complaints with the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA<\/a>) for getting discount vouchers in addition to free talk time, SMS, and data bundles in Vodacom<\/a>\u2019s \u201cGive a Gift, Give a Happy\u201d promotion.<\/p>\n

The commercial depicts a man who realises that he has forgotten his wallet at home, when he is already in a taxi.<\/p>\n

He shows his gratitude to the taxi driver, who allows him to complete the trip, by sending him a Vodacom \u201cgift\u201d. He also sends \u201cgifts\u201d to other people who help him.<\/p>\n

A voice states \u201cSend an SMS to 1234 with your friend\u2019s number, and they\u2019ll receive 60 minutes talk time, or 100MB of data, or 500 SMSes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two consumers complained, arguing that the commercial is misleading as it gives an impression that the gifts available are talk time, SMS, and data bundles only.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, they received discount vouchers that are subject to spending at certain stores. This is not what is promised,\u201d the ASA complaint stated.<\/p>\n

Vodacom pointed out that the discount vouchers received were additional gifts over and above those referred to in the advertising.<\/p>\n

As the advertising campaign has run its course and would not be repeated in its current format, the ASA did not need to rule on the matter.<\/p>\n
