The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa<\/a>) announced the new regulated rates for call termination on Wednesday, 29 January 2014.<\/p>\n

Call termination rates are the charges which one operator charges another operator to terminate a call on its network.<\/p>\n

The current termination rate for mobile calls is R0.40 per minute, while fixed calls are charged between R0.19 and R0.12 per minute.<\/p>\n

Icasa\u2019s new rates give smaller operators such as Cell C<\/a> and Telkom Mobile<\/a> a higher rate.\u00a0The level of asymmetry in the rates between large and small operators proposed by Icasa caused a big stir last year, with large operators decrying it and small operators applauding it.<\/p>\n

The table below summarises the call termination rates that are set to kick in on 1 March every year until 2017:<\/p>\n
