{"id":9681,"date":"2009-09-19T17:06:00","date_gmt":"2009-09-19T15:06:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2009-09-19T17:06:00","modified_gmt":"2009-09-19T15:06:00","slug":"google-versus-us-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/9681-google-versus-us-government.html","title":{"rendered":"Google versus US Government"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Justice Department, in a filing with a US District Court in New York, said the class action settlement raises copyright and anti-trust issues but it encouraged the parties to continue their discussions to address its concerns.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As presently drafted, the Proposed Settlement does not meet the legal standards this Court must apply,&#8221; the department said in a filing late on Friday with the court.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The public interest would best be served by direction from the Court encouraging the continuation of those discussions,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>The US District Court in New York is to hold a hearing on the settlement on October 7.<\/p>\n<p>Google reached a class action settlement in October with the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers to a copyright infringement suit they filed against the Mountain View, California, company in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>Under the settlement, Google agreed to pay $125m to resolve outstanding claims and establish an independent &#8220;Book Rights Registry,&#8221; which will provide revenue from sales and advertising to authors and publishers who agree to digitise their books.<\/p>\n<p>Google rivals Microsoft, Amazon and Yahoo! have filed objections to the settlement with the court along with the French and German governments, privacy advocates and consumer watchdog groups.<\/p>\n<p>Sony Electronics of Japan, maker of the electronic book reader the Sony Reader, and a group of 32 US professors of law and economics, have filed briefs supporting the deal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php?t=192977\"><strong>Google versus UG Government<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; comments and views<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The US Justice Department advised a court on Friday to reject a legal settlement between Google and authors and publishers that would allow the internet giant to scan and sell millions of books online.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[18],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-9681","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-internet"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9681"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=9681"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9681\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=9681"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=9681"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=9681"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
