{"id":97229,"date":"2014-03-05T22:43:39","date_gmt":"2014-03-05T20:43:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=97229"},"modified":"2014-03-05T22:45:46","modified_gmt":"2014-03-05T20:45:46","slug":"telkom-may-close-many-exchanges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/telecoms\/97229-telkom-may-close-many-exchanges.html","title":{"rendered":"Telkom may close many exchanges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Telkom\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227037-Telkom\">Telkom<\/a> is planning to replace copper services with wireless 3G and LTE products in areas where the company\u2019s exchanges are losing money.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Miriam Altman\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/539953-Miriam-Altman\">Miriam Altman<\/a>, head of strategy at Telkom, told MyBroadband that of its 1,900 exchanges, only about 600 are really profitable.<\/p>\n<p>It is understood that these 600 exchanges is where users can expect Telkom to roll out its <a title=\"MSAN\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/417432-MSAN-Multi-Service-Access-Nodes\">MSAN<\/a> network to offer 20Mbps and 40Mbps <a title=\"VDSL\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/289117-VDSL\">VDSL<\/a> services.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of Telkom\u2019s exchanges \u2013 around 1,000 which are not particularly profitable but are also not losing money \u2013 will be maintained in their current state.<\/p>\n<p>The loss making exchanges, close to 300, are facing the axe.
