{"id":9742,"date":"2009-09-24T09:01:00","date_gmt":"2009-09-24T07:01:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2009-09-24T09:01:00","modified_gmt":"2009-09-24T07:01:00","slug":"new-google-tool","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/9742-new-google-tool.html","title":{"rendered":"New Google tool"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Google Sidewiki&#8221; appears as a narrow pop-up browser panel on the left hand side of a website and displays messages from users about the content of the page.<\/p>\n<p>The messages are visible to other users of Sidewiki who visit the site and they can post their own comments, but they cannot edit the comments of others.<\/p>\n<p>A website about museums in New York city, for example, would have a Sidewiki panel featuring relevant notes and comments from other visitors.<\/p>\n<p>Google, in a blog post, said Sidewiki was a way for Web users to contribute &#8220;insights&#8221; and &#8220;helpful information&#8221; next to any Web page.<\/p>\n<p>The Internet search and advertising giant said it had developed an algorithm to ensure that the &#8220;most useful, high-quality entries&#8221; are displayed at the top of a Sidewiki panel.<\/p>\n<p>Sidewiki is a feature of Google Toolbar for Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers and Google said it will be available soon for Google Chrome, its own Web browser.<\/p>\n<p>Google Sidewiki is similar to other services launched in the past and it met with mixed reviews from technology bloggers.<\/p>\n<p>Ars Technica said Sidewiki was &#8220;intriguing&#8221; but &#8220;it&#8217;s unclear if the service will really deliver a lot of value&#8221; and it could end up being &#8220;little more than a glorified comment system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>PaidContent.org said Sidewiki &#8220;may anger some online publishers who have commenting systems of their own that they&#8217;d prefer visitors continue to use.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A blogger for TechCrunch said he does not have high hopes for Sidewiki.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Marking up the Web has limited appeal to the average consumer,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php?t=193753\"><strong>Google Sidewiki discussion<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Google unveiled a new tool on Wednesday which allows notes and comments to be posted alongside Web pages for others to read.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[18],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-9742","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-internet"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9742"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=9742"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9742\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=9742"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=9742"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=9742"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
