The company at the same time launched a prepaid trial, giving participants 500 Megabytes of free data.

iBurst’s initial prepaid pricing was widely criticized for being uncompetitive in the current prepaid wireless market, and it would seem that the broadband provider took cognizance of this outcry from consumers and decided to cut the price of its higher data bundles. While iBurst’s prepaid offerings were previously more expensive than similar services from the cellular providers, the new tariffs mean that it now undercuts Vodacom and MTN.

When it comes to the life of a data bundle iBurst also compares favourably with Vodacom and MTN. Both cellular providers offer a data bundle life of up to 60 days while iBurst’s prepaid data has a life span of 12 months. “Any voucher bundle purchased has a life span of 12 months before it will expire – so unused bandwidth would essentially carry over for a 12 month period from date of purchase,” iBurst explains.

The following table provides a snapshot of how iBurst’s newly launched prepaid data bundles compare with competing services in the market.

iBurst Prepaid Pricing Comparison

Service

Advertised Speed

Data Bundle

Price

Cost/MB

G-Connect

3.6 Mbps

R 25

R 0.62

MTN HSDPA

3.6 Mbps

10 MB

R 10

R 1.00

iBurst Wireless Month-to-month

1 Mbps

40 MB

R 49

R 1.23

iBurst Wireless Prepaid

1 Mbps

40 MB

R 50

R 1.25

G-Connect

3.6 Mbps

R 100

R 0.62

iBurst Wireless Prepaid

1 Mbps

160 MB

R 100

R 0.63

Vodacom MyMeg 150

3.6 Mbps

150 MB

R 119

R 0.79

MTN

3.6 Mbps

100 MB

R 80

R 0.80

iBurst Wireless Month-to-month

1 Mbps

1024 MB

R 199

R 0.19

iBurst Wireless Prepaid

1 Mbps

900 MB

R 200

R 0.22

MTN

3.6 Mbps

1024 MB

R 289

R 0.28

Vodacom MyMeg One

3.6 Mbps

1024 MB

R 289

R 0.28

iBurst Wireless Month-to-month

1 Mbps

3 GB

R 449

R 0.15

iBurst Wireless Prepaid

1 Mbps

3 GB

R 500

R 0.16

Vodacom MyGig Two

3.6 Mbps

3 GB

R 589

R 0.19

iBurst prepaid pricing –
