{"id":9915,"date":"2009-10-07T22:26:00","date_gmt":"2009-10-07T20:26:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2009-10-07T22:26:00","modified_gmt":"2009-10-07T20:26:00","slug":"cyber-crime-ring-smashed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/telecoms\/9915-cyber-crime-ring-smashed.html","title":{"rendered":"Cyber-crime ring smashed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said in a statement 33 people were arrested across the United States early Wednesday while authorities in Egypt charged 47 more people linked to the scam.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 53 suspects were named in connection with the scam in a federal grand jury indictment, the FBI said.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities said the sophisticated identity theft network had gathered information from thousands of victims which was used to defraud American banks.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday&#8217;s arrests were the culmination of a two-year probe involving US and Egyptian officials dubbed &#8220;Operation Phish Phry.&#8221; The investigation was described in statement as the largest cybercrime investigation to date in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>A series of raids early Wednesday resulted in arrests in California, Nevada and North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>A 51-count US indictment accuses all defendants with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud while various defendants are charged with aggravated identity theft and conspiracy to commit computer fraud.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The sophistication with which Phish Phry defendants operated represents an evolving and troubling paradigm in the way identity theft is now committed,&#8221; FBI Los Angeles acting assistant director Keith Bolcar said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Criminally savvy groups recruit here and abroad to pool tactics and skills necessary to commit organized theft facilitated by the computer, including hacking, fraud and identity theft, with a common greed and shared willingness to victimize Americans.&#8221; The investigation comes hard on the heels of a security breach targeting thousands of Microsoft Hotmail accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Cyber-crooks evidently used &#8220;phishing&#8221; tactics to dupe users of Microsoft&#8217;s free Web-based email service into revealing account and access information, according to the US technology giant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php?t=196140\"><strong>Phishing scam discussion<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Investigators in the United States and Egypt have smashed a computer &quot;phishing&quot; identity theft scam described as the biggest cyber-crime investigation in US history, officials said Wednesday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-9915","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-telecoms"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9915"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=9915"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9915\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=9915"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=9915"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=9915"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
