{"id":99890,"date":"2014-04-07T15:31:30","date_gmt":"2014-04-07T13:31:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=99890"},"modified":"2014-04-08T08:48:27","modified_gmt":"2014-04-08T06:48:27","slug":"will-you-pay-more-for-voip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/99890-will-you-pay-more-for-voip.html","title":{"rendered":"Will you pay more for VoIP?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"WhatsApp\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/501086-WhatsApp\">WhatsApp<\/a> plans to launch mobile voice services in 2014 and this made many people sit up and take notice, because it strikes right at the heart of mobile operators&#8217; main revenue stream \u2013 voice.<\/p>\n<p>It is currently not clear how the cellular operators plan to defend against the potential loss of revenue from mobile VoIP services.<\/p>\n<p>One of the ways is to charge higher fees for VoIP traffic on their data network. <a title=\"Vodacom\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227063-Vodacom\">Vodacom<\/a> and <a title=\"MTN\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/226943-MTN\">MTN<\/a> are well prepared for this (see <a title=\"Vodacom and MTN and mobile VoIP\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/98980-how-vodacom-mtn-can-kill-mobile-voip.html\"><strong>How Vodacom, MTN can kill mobile VoIP<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Many years ago MTN lodged a rate of R25 per MB for VoIP traffic, and Vodacom lodged a tariff of R10 per MB.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vodacom<\/strong> however, said that it has no current plans to levy an additional charge for VoIP.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MTN<\/strong> avoided questions on whether it plans to charge higher rates for VoIP in future, instead focussing on the current regime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMTN does not charge differently for VOIP usage on its network, we currently view this usage as normal data. This means that there is no R25 per MB charge on VOIP. MTN does not underestimate the impact of services such as WhatsApp,\u201d said <a title=\"Mike Fairon\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/381083-Mike-Fairon\">Mike Fairon<\/a>, MTN SA\u2019s general manager of products and solutions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cell C<\/strong> has not lodged a different tariff for VoIP traffic, despite the fact that VoIP traffic on the company\u2019s network is growing fast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs networks become all-data networks, VoIP traffic is growing at a fast pace. The rise of smart devices has lead to more applications supporting rich communications services like VoIP and video,\u201d Cell C said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany customers are using these services to enrich their mobile experience.
