On Gumtree you can find some MLs for under R200 000, but I'm not sure you'd want to buy one (or even get into one in case you catch something).
    Change is the only constant.

What? You hijacked some poor guy and then threw R52k at him out the window before driving off?

I know the letters can be confusing, but we're talking about the ML, not the Model T :P

1898, huh? Must have been a pre-release model then, coz the Model T only came out in 1908.

Ok ok ok, back on topic, I need to just point out that I also like the VW Tiguan, and I discovered that VW offers some very deep discounts on it (up to R50 000 off if you factor all the various incentives in). You get this "assistance" if you end up purchasing one during a "promotional period" (I doubt whatever a salesperson will claim in terms of the dealer discount they're authorised to apply to meet targets), and if you take VW finance for it, etc etc. I've seen entry-level Tiguans marked on retail for under R280 000 with all those incentives factored in, so it really is possible (4Motion models are a whole different story of course).

You can do better than the current Tiguan. It's not the best interior and the boot is quite small. Does look slightly dated now as well. The new one will set a bit of a benchmark again. Not far above some of the competition, but definitely slightly better, yet probably dearer. The 176kW TDi with DSG and the new 4motion system, with select terrain type control, will probably be pushing R600k... but then you have to ask yourself why you are not looking at a Cherokee Limited or Discovery Sport, or even the Upcoming V6 Amarok.

The best suggestion I've seen here is the Forester XT second hand. You can get a 2014 with under 50000km for less than R400k

There was also that roller test which the Subaru passed and everything else with AWD apparently failed (Honda, Toyota, Ford etc), although there were a few untested vehicles that would have also passed it at the time, like the X-Trail, Patriot and anything else with a central locking differential. These days there are a lot more vehicles in this class that would actually pass that test, including the new Tiguan and new Tucson.
