Still no full power for SA-spec!

LOCAL PRICING FOR THE UPDATED VOLKSWAGEN GOLF R

The updated Volkswagen Golf R is set to take its place at the very summit of the refreshed local Golf line-up when it launches later this month. And we have pricing for the latest version of the all-wheel-drive Golf 7 R.

Revealed last year, the hot hatch’s 2,0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine now makes 228 kW in international form, although South Africa will receive a 213 kW version (up from the pre-facelift 206 kW output), detuned since the country is classed as a “hot climate” market. Peak torque, meanwhile, stays at 380 N.m (other markets receive the full-fat 400 N.m).

The local model will be available exclusively with the Wolfsburg brand’s seven-speed DSG transmission (VW SA killed off the manual versions of the Golf GTI and Golf R a little while back), and features a claimed fuel consumption figure of 6,9 L/100 km.

The price? Well, the facelifted VW Golf R will start at R647 300, although a handful of options – from a reversing camera and uprated sound system to navigation and adaptive chassis control – will be offered.

Standard equipment includes 19-inch “Spielberg” alloys, an eight-inch touchscreen, LED tail-lamps (with dynamic turn signals), leather sports seats and a panoramic tilt/slide sunroof. Interestingly, VW’s Active Info Display (the digital cockpit) will also apparently come fitted as standard.

I have noticed the R pricing is always around R85k above GTi

This one is R82k more than a similar spec GTi.
The 6R was R85k more than a GTi.
The R32 was R90k more than a GTi.

Personally I think its worth it. The 7R is a great performance car. It will put down that 228kW and 380Nm on most road conditions.

VW announces SA prices for GTD and new R

Two months after the facelifted Volkswagen Golf ‘7.5’ range went on sale in South Africa, two of the most exciting derivatives are set to go on sale this month, these being the GTD and the new Golf R.

Ahead of the pair’s launch, VWSA has posted pricing and specifications for the pair on its website, with the GTD listed at R506 700 and the R priced at R647 300.

    Golf GTD

Touted as the GTI of diesels, the GTD is dressed up like its hot-hatch sibling and powered by a 130kW/380Nm version of VW’s familiar 2-litre TDI engine, mated to a six-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox.

Local cars come with leather sports seats (heated up front), an eight-speaker sound system linked to a 20cm touchscreen, cruise control and ambient interior lighting.

The GTD rides on 18-inch Sevilla alloy wheels and comes with a styling kit that could see it easily mistaken for a GTI. LED headlights are also part of the deal here.

Best of all, the GTD costs almost R40 000 less than the GTI and our initial impressions indicate that it could be the pick of the bunch. Jesse Adams drove one in Spain earlier this year and was hugely impressed by it. Read his impressions here.

    Golf R

Topping the line-up is a revised version of the all-wheel-drive Golf R, with outputs from its 2-litre TSI turbopetrol engine raised from 206kW to 213kW, while the maximum torque figure remains 380Nm.

As the hottest Golf of them all, the R receives its own specific body styling kit and sports suspension, as well as 19-inch Sebring alloy wheels.

Inside it gets the 20cm touchscreen Composition Media system as per the GTD, along with ambient lighting and leather sports seats, but over and above all that the R also comes with VW’s 30.5cm digital instrument cluster (Active Info Display in VW speak) as standard.

However, at R647 300, it does come at an almost R100 000 premium over the R545 800 GTI.

    New Golf R

The hottest Golf yet, the new R variant, is powered by a 2-litre TSI, capable of 213kW/380Nm, mated to a 7-speed DSG.

The R has unique styling and sports suspension to differentiate it from the GTD and GTI. It uses 19" Sebring alloys.

    At R647 300, it's nearly R100 000 more than the aforementioned GTI.

I had VW's most of my life. And I must be the most anti VW.
Hate the direction they went. Golf 1 GTI was a cheap pocket rocket. Now GTI is a nothing more than a over expensive ps4 game.
And you can sell DSG anyway you like its just a automatic. Automatic box should not be in a drivers car.
Some prefer the dsg some love manual and vw cut the manual box. Willing to bet when the new one comes around they will go back to a manual option.

To be fair the cutting of stick shift was a VWSA decision not VW AG.

We wait and see what they decide to bring in come G8 (GTI) time.

Wait wait wait, let's put this into perspective. What did a brand new MK1 GTI cost and what did a (let's use a) BMW E21 / E30 320 cost ?
