Ja that is the standard notice, been like that for a while now.

But yes the new Board has indicated they are going to take action.

I heard a news item on the subject that indicated the new SABC Board's intentions.

    (1) get rid of the current contract awarded to a collection agency
    (2) Clean up the SABC database
    (3) Empower the Licensing department to do their work properly, by cleaning up the processes and procedures used.
    (4) Prosecute a few defaulters to the extent the law allows as an example to others.

    I don't see
    (5) Remove deceased individuals and those that no longer own a tv set.

I don't pay mine because I don't have the money, I don't pay it out of principle. I don't need to give the government more money to piss away.

Iguess that would be included in the database clean up.

What we should really do is try and get the likes of the TV manufacturers in this country to stop putting it in.

If TV A requires a TV licence and TV B doesn't, every single person in South Africa would buy TV A.

And what use would that have? We already have tvs without it, we call them monitors.

Because there is no such thing as a tuner-less TV.

TVs are designed to display broadcast video. To be able to do that they have to have a receiver of some sort. Anything else is a MONITOR. A TV actually makes for a rather poor monitor most times.

No but I have an issue with someone asking they be turned into monitors when they can just purchase a monitor. A tv by definition has a tuner and people buy them for the capability this provides or else they would buy a monitor.

Do you see many 50"+ monitors when you walk through Makro or Dion Wired? If so how do they compare in price to an LCD?

I know a lot of people that never watch terrestrial television. Their television programming comes entirely via satellite or internet - what use is a tuner to them?

I still don't get this stance. It's law, much like income tax and levies on petrol and booze and whatever. All that money is being used by the ANC in their gravy train.

And then we have a R265 a year fee that is negligible compared to everything else - and suddenly everyone has a stand about it.

And for this R265 (if you do not pay it), it will inconvenience you if you want to get a new TV; or in terms of legal threats.

Pick your battles folks - this should not be one of them.
