Default Sanral overpaid close to R10bn on Gauteng freeway upgrade - Outa

South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) for the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) should be accounted for, according to civil rights body the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse.

At a press briefing held at the Gordon Institute of Business Science on Monday, Outa highlighted that the project which cost Sanral R17.9bn could have cost between R8bn and R9bn.

Sounds like the companies who built / improved the roads.... read somewhere that collusion between those companies is suspected.

SANRAL is in the business to build roads. They should know better than anyone what the going rates are. Someone took some money on the side. Simple as that.

To get the contract you pay the fee. My dad saw it in the mining industry. His company would apply for the mineral rights to start a new shaft or mine with the chamber. To get approval they had to line up a pig, I mean partner, who took a 15% cut or so. It all worked smoothly for a while under Mbeki until the whole Zuma fight happened. Shortly after Mbekhi was recalled they sent in an application with the usual partner and it was rejected. They where told they now had the wrong partner. A Xhosa one to be exact. What they needed now was the correct Zulu partner.

What is disgusting (other than it is blatant corruption of course) is they would never bend on that. Some projects that would have employed 5000 + of the poorest South African's where no longer viable due to that extra 15% cost. The ANC cares more about their pig contracts than any number of poor unemployed citizens. I am guessing the same thing happened here.
Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
