I just read about this on The Truth About Cars. The article was saying that it hopes that it doesn't suffer the fate of the Phaeton.

So VW names it after a survivor of a nuclear world war to make it survive?

    Volkswagen Arteon Revealed [with Video]

Volkswagen has officially taken the wraps off of its new luxury gran turismo (grand tourer). Meet the Volkswagen Arteon, which is positioned above the Passat and replaces the outgoing CC model.

The Volkswagen Arteon comes to market as a 5-door fastback, brimming with the latest technology and premium design. Built on the MQB platform that underpins a host of Audi and Volkswagen products, the Arteon features a long wheelbase and is fairly wide, which presupposes excellent interior space. At 4 862 mm long and 1 871 mm wide, the Arteon is sizeable. Boot space is claimed to sit at 563 litres and can be expanded to 1 557 litres.

Its front-end design is arguably the newcomer's biggest talking point. With a long bonnet, striking daytime running lights and LED headlights, there'll be no mistaking the Arteon for anything else. The flared wheel arches can accommodate wheels of up to 20-inch alloys.

The Volkswagen Arteon sits above the Passat and will be manufactured at Volkswagen's plant in Emden, Germany. The vehicle launches in mid-June in the German market and has been confirmed for the South African market introduction. There are 6 engines, front-wheel or all-wheel drive configurations, plus digital displays and controls. Options include Active Info Display (fully digital and programmable instruments), a head-up display and the new Discover Pro infotainment system with a 9.2-inch glass screen and gesture control.

Overview of petrol engines for the Arteon:

1.5 TSI Evo, 110 kW 6-speed/optional 7-speed DSG (DSG for 1.5 TSI Evo not Germany)
    2.0 TSI, 140 kW 7-speed DSG
    2.0 TSI, 206 kW 7-speed DSG plus 4MOTION
Overview of turbodiesel engines for the Volkswagen Arteon:

    2.0 TDI, 110 kW 6-speed/optional 7-speed DSG
    2.0 TDI, 140 kW 6-speed/optional 7-speed DSG / optional 4MOTION
    2.0 TDI, 176 kW 7-speed DSG plus 4MOTION
    Two Trim Levels

Arteon: Fancy fastback shows new face of VW

Volkswagen has fully revealed the Arteon, a fastback-shaped five-door premium car that slots above the Passat, seemingly encroaching on territory that would usually be reserved for snazzier sister-brand Audi.

While the Arteon, which VW refers to as “an avant-garde gran turismo” will fill part of the void left by the CC, which really was just a rebodied Passat, the newcomer is a more distinct offering. It’s also larger than the Passat, gaining 95mm in length, with an additional 50mm in the wheelbase, and it’s 39mm wider. Its maker promises “excellent” interior space as well as a roomy 563 litre boot, but it’s the elegantly formed fastback shape that’s likely to seal the deal for many buyers.

The car brings new styling elements to the brand, particularly at the front end, with its deeper design and chrome cross bars that flow seamlessly into the standard LED headlights. The carmaker calls this “the face of a new VW generation.” Filling the large wheel arches are alloys sized between 17 and 20 inches in diameter.

The Arteon rides on VW’s now-well-known MQB modular platform for transverse-engined cars, with top models offering 4Motion permanent all-wheel drive, while VW’s DSG dual-clutch automated gearbox is standard on all but the base petrol model.

On that note, European customers will have six turbo-charged engines to choose between. The petrol range includes the company’s new 1.5-litre TSI Evo, tuned to 110kW, as well as a 140kW 2.0 TSI and an all-wheel-driven 206kW 2.0 TSI. Three 2.0 TDI units make up the diesel menu in 110kW, 140kW and 176kW guises, the latter fitted with all-wheel drive.

Technologically the Arteon brings a raft of new or revised safety gizmos into the VW range, including a newer version of Adaptive Cruise Control that incorporates navigation data and speed limits into its sums, second-generation Emergency Assist, which can swerve as well as brake automatically when conditions allow, a Lane Assist system that can react to swerving vehicles and predictive cornering lights that use navigation data.

The cabin, depending on how brave you are with the options list, features VW’s Active Info Display digital instrument cluster and newly developed infotainment systems with touch-screens up to 23.3cm in size.

For ambience, VW has included a wrap-around ambient lighting strip, but the design otherwise bears a strong resemblance to the Passat’s cockpit. Buyers wanting to spice things up will be able to opt for ‘Elegance’ or ‘R-Line’ equipment packs.

According to VWSA, the Arteon is under consideration for local release during 2018.

VW says new Arteon will ‘challenge premium brands’

Earlier this week, the new Volkswagen Arteon was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. And now the German brand’s chairperson says the CC successor was conceived to “challenge” the premium automakers.

“The new Arteon has the proportions of a GT with a highly functional overall concept,” said Dr Herbert Diess, chairman of the board of management at the Volkswagen brand.

“It offers the very latest infotainment features and semi-automated driving functions. At the same time, our new top-of the-line model offers great value for money. That is how we are challenging the premium carmakers,” Diess added.

He is, of course, referring to the likes of the Audi A5 Sportback and BMW 4 Series Gran Turismo.

The Wolfsburg automaker says the Arteon “offers a remarkable amount of space and comfort” considering its coupé-like lines. It adds that the new fastback, which is based on the Passat, has the “latest generation driver assistance systems, which in the past have been reserved for higher car classes”.

It also boasts frameless side windows and a wrap-around bonnet, while the wide-opening rear hatch that is hinged at the top affords access to the 563-litre luggage compartment (a figure VW claims in best-in-class).
