Thread: ADSL Modem question

  1. #1

    Default ADSL Modem question

    I have a Telkom Pace ADSL modem. Will I get better performance if I replace it with this : TP-LINK W9970 300Mbps Wireless N VDSL2/ADSL2+

    Currently my greatest issue with the Pace is that it has no external antenna and the WiFi range is not great.

    Wireless range depends on a whole lot things, and antennas are an important part of this. You have not given enough info on the Pace, and I do not know which wireless standard/s it supports, so I cannot comment on whether the TP-Link would be a good upgrade or not. Before splashing a few hundred on a new router, and a new wireless standard (which probably means having to change your endpoints' standards as well), you may consider:

    1. Trying to do a site survey to determine whether there are nearby APs that are broadcasting on the same channel, or even a channel that is close to yours which is causing interference. There are a number of android apps that can do this;
    2. Making your own external antenna for the Pace, if you are handy. Andrew McNeil's channel has some fascinating videos, and the interesting thing is that he proves that manufacturers' antennas are often not the greatest:

    So if the Pace only supports the (ancient) 802.11b or 802.11g standard, then yes, you may see a marked increase in both speed and range, but only if your endpoints are 802.11n capable.
