Default Paris to ban combustion-engine cars by 2030

Paris is set to ban all petrol and diesel-fueled cars by 2030. An official told French radio it was part of a long-term strategy to reduce greenhouse gases.

Paris's deputy mayor, Christophe Najdovski, told French broadcaster France Info that the mayor's office is planning to ban all combustion-engine cars on the French capital's streets by 2030. Electric cars will not be affected by the ban.

"This is about planning for the long term with a strategy that will reduce greenhouse gases," said Christophe Najdovski, who is responsible for transport policy at the office of Mayor Anne Hidalgo.

In an attempt to battle the high levels of pollution in the French capital, the mayor's office had already announced a ban on diesel cars by 2024. Hidalgo also introduced car-free days and zones as well as a 20-mph (32 kph) speed limit throughout the city.

    Diesel, petrol ban nationwide:
Although more than 60 percent of Parisians do not own cars and rely on an extensive public transport system instead, the ban is a drastic move as Paris is the world's most visited city and will also host the Olympics in 2024.

Also in July, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that no more gasoline and diesel-powered cars would be sold in the whole of France by 2040. In his first budget, which was presented at the end of September, Macron vowed to impose a 10-percent tax rise to 7.6 cents ($0.09) a liter on diesel cars nationwide.

That has been the case for 10+ years. Welcome to the modern world !

The streets of Paris are actually filled with electric car sharing service called Autolib since 2011.

Diesel will be phased out in Paris in 2024 and petrol in 2030.

Thumbs up Not the only ones.

Today, the new Dutch government presented its detailed plan for the coming years and it includes making all new cars emission-free by 2030 -- virtually banning petrol- and diesel-powered cars in favor of battery-powered vehicles. The four coalition parties have been negotiating their plans since the election in March and now after over 200 days, they have finally released the plan they agreed upon. NL Times posted all the main points of the plan and in "transportation," it includes: By 2030 all cars in the Netherlands must be emission free. While some local publications are reporting "all cars," we are told that it would be for "all new cars" as it is the case for the countries with similar bans under consideration. The potential for the ban has been under consideration in the country since last year. The year 2025, like in Norway, has been mentioned, but they apparently decided for the less ambitious goal of 2030.
New diesel and petrol vehicles to be banned from 2040 in UK

Manufacturers jumping on the bandwagon too.

General Motors joined a growing group of automakers promising an emissions-free future for cars by pledging to sell 20 all-electric vehicles by 2023. The largest U.S. automaker, which generates most of its profit with large sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks, plans to have a lineup of both battery-powered cars and hydrogen fuel-cell autos, which also run on electricity. Two new EVs will debut in the next 18 months to follow the Chevrolet Bolt that's been on sale for less than a year. The planned lineup demonstrates GM is doubling down on electrification despite the Bolt's slow start in U.S. showrooms and companies' inability thus far to profitably sell EVs. The automaker has delivered fewer than 12,000 units of the battery-powered Bolt, which goes about 238 miles between charges. Deliveries have primarily been concentrated thus far in California, which mandates sales of emissions-less vehicles.
Volvo have announced they are going full electric only in a few years.

And? That doesn't change the fact that they are shyte at electronics in general and they would do the world a favour by rather letting proper engineers build electrical cars

More effort needs to go into making ethanol and butanol fuel on massive scales and doing so cheaply. Fact remains that every country in the world has massive infrastructure to cater to the internal combustion engine. By switching to ethanol and butanol fuels that infrastructure can continue to serve and also, internal combustion engines is going to be around for a long time after the ban comes into effect I imagine.
