Default Mysterious Radioactive Cloud Over Europe Hints At Accident Farther East

European authorities are providing new details about a cloud of mysterious radioactive material that appeared over the continent last month.

Monitors in Italy were among first to detect the radioactive isotope ruthenium-106 on Oct. 3, according to a fresh report by France's Radioprotection and Nuclear Safety Institute, known as IRSN. In total, 28 European countries saw the radioactive cloud, the report says.

The multinational Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation, which runs a network designed to monitor for nuclear weapons tests, also confirmed to NPR that it had detected the cloud.

That's one of the good reasons to be living in the southern hemisphere. When places like North Korea let off smoke, we are not downwind of them...

This is exactly how the world first got an inkling of the Chernobyl crisis. I hope there isn't another covered up nuclear meltdown going on. Bad timing for the Russians if there is, will probably kill their SA deal (which would be good for us, but not good for anyone affected).

The IRSN analysis suggests that the ruthenium did not come from a nuclear reactor accident. Instead, it most likely came from either the chemical reprocessing of old nuclear fuel or the production of isotopes used in medicine.

From Russia or Kazakhstan, no risks to human health or environment, only a few kilometers around the area should have been evacuated.

“Russian authorities have said they are not aware of an accident on their territory,” IRSN director Jean-Marc Peres told Reuters. He added that the institute had not yet been in contact with Kazakh authorities.
I simply don't trust these fsckers. People of Pripyat weren't notified and only evacuated more than a day after Chernobyl went pop, they did not notify other countries or any nuclear oversight bodies. I wonder how long they would have remained silent had the Swedes not picked up on the radiation a few days later and when they asked the Russians if there was any accident the Russians replied with a 'nyet'.

That was the standard response from the Soviet Union at the time for most things, and Chenobyl was unfortunately part and parcel of that entity -Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.

Everything had to go via Moscow.
