Krejcir, Lolly Jackson links emerge in Modack bail bid

Cape Town - Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir’s name has emerged in the bail application of controversial businessman Nafiz Modack, who was apparently meant to collect a R12m debt for him.

Charl Kinnear, a police colonel who is investigating fights in clubs, testified to this in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

He said in a recording he had, between Modack and another person who could not be clearly heard, Modack said he "had to do a R12m debt collection for Krejcir."

    Murdered strip club owner link

This had to be collected from the wife of murdered Teazers owner Lolly Jackson.

Jackson was shot dead at his Kempton Park home in May 2010.

Kinnear said this debt, according to Krejcir, would then split in half between him and Modack.

This recording was from September 3, 2017.

Modack, as well as Colin Booysen - who is the brother of suspected Sexy Boys gang leader Jerome "Donkie" Booysen - Jacques Cronje, Ashley Fields, and Carl Lakay, face extortion charges relating to nightclub security.

They are applying for bail following their arrests on December 15.

    Ukrainian recruit

Earlier on Wednesday Kinnear testified that Modack had recruited Igor Russol, who at that stage was in the Ukraine.

Russol, who had worked for slain underworld kingpin Cyril Beeka when previously in South Africa, was meant to assist in the takeover of club security.

Russol had said that Modack had planned to kill controversial businessman Mark Lifman, Jerome Booysen and then, afterwards, Colin Booysen.

Kinnear said Russol worked for Modack until May 2017. Russol then worked for Lifman.

He testified that Russol, after taking up work for Lifman, spotted a gunman in a club who apparently intended on shooting him.

This club, Iconic Lounge in Long Street in the Cape Town city centre, was owned by Lifman.

    'Kill the Russian'

Russol told Kinnear a woman smuggled the firearm into Iconic Lounge and gave it to the man.

Later, after the man was caught, Russol told Kinnear messages from Colin Booysen were discovered on his phone.

The messages, according to Kinnear, said "the person must kill the Russian in the club".

On Tuesday Kinnear testified that in a voice recording of a meeting, Modack could be heard saying he worked with "high ranking police officers".

    Cop link claims

Modack had also said that "Tiyo and Mbotho" would iron out any problems he faced.

He had been referring to Major-General Mzwandile Tiyo, the Western Cape's head of crime intelligence, and Major-General Patrick Mbotho, a provincial head of detectives.

Cape Town - Nafiz Modack planned to wipe out rival businessman Mark Lifman and alleged 26s gang boss Jerome “Donkie” Booysen – as well as his own “partner” Colin Booysen – to run the Cape Town nightclub security business himself.

In sensational testimony in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, a police investigator also claimed Major-General Jeremy Vearey, the head of the Cape Town cluster of police, was working with the notorious 26s, 27s and 28s gangs.

Vearey was part of a plot to murder lawyer Noorudien Hassen, the court heard.

Hassen, who was gunned down outside his Crawford home in November 2016, counted among his underworld clients alleged 28s gang leader Ralph Stanfield.

In a day of bombshell revelations in court, investigating officer Charl Kinnear continued his testimony against Modack, Colin Booysen, Jacques Cronjé, Ashley Fields and Carl Lakay, who face extortion and intimidation charges.

The five are applying for bail following their arrests on 15 December.

Kinnear detailed recorded conversations between Modack and a “Serbian”, which Kinnear claimed to be the source of the recently released book, The President’s Keepers, by journalist Jacques Pauw.

Kinnear testified: “Modack said Vearey was working for the 26s gang under Jerome Booysen, for the 27s gang under the leader known only as ‘Red’, and for the 28s gang under Ralph Stanfield. He also claims Vearey arranged the hit on lawyer Noorudien Hassen with Jerome Booysen and Mark Lifman...

Bail bids reveal underworld tentacles dig deep and stretch beyond SA border

Cape Town – Several bail applications of figures linked to nightclub security, which have been playing out over the past few weeks, have shed light on just how murky and entrenched underworld activities are.

Three matters, which have been heard mostly in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court, have exposed claims that top police officials are involved in underworld activities.

So far, the names of five senior police officers have surfaced. At least four alleged murder plots have also been revealed.

The three court matters have also highlighted how underworld tentacles rooted in South Africa have stretched to other countries.

Controversial businessman Nafiz Modack is at the centre of one matter, security company director Grant Veroni is the subject of the second, and Hussain Ait Taleb, 49, a martial arts expert better known in bouncer circles as Hussain Moroccan, is the focus of the third.

All three have been the focus of bail applications over the past two months.

    International links

In the bail application of Modack, who faces an extortion charge along with four co-accused, it emerged that he has alleged links to a businessman from Pakistan, who is said to have supplied him with cash, a key security figure from the Ukraine, and a man in Serbia.

His contact with the man in Serbia, it was claimed in court, highlights his ties to government officials in South Africa.

Alleged ties to police officials surfaced in Modack's and Taleb's bail applications.

Modack is accused of extortion along with Colin Booysen – who is the brother of alleged Sexy Boys gang boss Jerome Booysen – Jacques Cronje, Ashley Fields, and Carl Lakay.

They are expected back in the dock next week for the continuation of their bail applications.

In Veroni’s bail application, which unfolded in November and early December, details about allegedly illegal security operations surfaced.

Veroni was eventually granted bail in the Western Cape High Court after his release was denied in the regional court.

Director of Bellville-based company Skhosana Maponyane Hall Phillips and Khumalo, trading as The Security Group (TSG), he faces two charges relating to the alleged possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

He also faces a fraud charge in a separate case, set to be heard in Bellville, in which it is alleged that he and a co-accused recruited security guards and applied for firearm licences for them, but never actually employed them.

    'Security company dominating nightclub takeover'

During Veroni's bail application, Sergeant Edward Edwardes, who is involved in police investigations of the underworld, testified that TSG was at the forefront of taking over nightclub security operations from a more established grouping.

He had testified that many of TSG's security guards were not registered with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (Psira).

"Even Psira inspectors fear for their lives if they take on certain security companies," Edwardes had said.

Edwardes also testified during Taleb's bail application. Taleb was arrested in October and released from custody on December 22.

He faces a conspiracy to commit murder charge.

It is alleged that Taleb contracted two "individuals" to kill a prominent Cape Town club owner who did not want to pay him protection money.

Taleb had been represented in court by Keith Gess, of the law firm Mathewson Gess Attorneys, and Bruce Hendricks of Hassan-Harmse Attorneys.

More claims of top cops' involvement

During proceedings, Gess referred to the alleged involvement of "top generals" in underworld activities. The names of the police generals were not mentioned.

Names of police generals, however, surfaced in Modack's bail application. Edwardes has been present during these proceedings.

This week Charl Kinnear, a police colonel who is investigating fights in Cape Town clubs, testified in Modack's application that there was a recording of Modack saying "he was dealing with high-ranking police officials and, should there ever be a problem, Tiyo and Mbotho can sort it out".

He was referring to Major-General Mzwandile Tiyo, the Western Cape's head of crime intelligence, and Major-General Patrick Mbotho, a provincial head of detectives.

Kinnear also referred to a meeting Modack had at the One and Only hotel with Northern Cape police commissioner Risimati Shivuri. News24 had witnessed this meeting in May 2017.

In another recording, according to Kinnear, Modack claimed that Kinnear and Major-General Jeremy Vearey, who heads up the Cape Town cluster of police and who was instrumental in his arrest, were on the payroll of controversial businessman Mark Lifman and Jerome Booysen.

    Potential developments

During Taleb’s bail application, Edwardes had said that six more suspects were set to be arrested.

He said complaints from owners of establishments around Cape Town had resulted in the opening of about 14 cases relating to extortion, intimidation and assault.

Edwardes had testified that several underworld cases could be joined to form one massive case.

This case would fall under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.

Probably yes, but I think Modack is in for a world of trouble after it came out that he planned to kill Jerome and Colin, unless it was all a ploy they arranged between them.

Modack and his crew, except for Collin will be nailed seeing as they are the enemy of Lifman who funds the ANC. Lifman and our esteemed president ****face's son is doing illegal cigarette smuggling so there is no way him and the Booysen brother get ****.

Just look how quickly evidence was collected and arrests were made against Modack et al but Lifman who has been under investigation for 15 years is still a free man.

This entire thing was an instruction from Lifman to the government to stop these guys from interfering with his business and seeing as he is in business with that fat sack of ****, and donates a huge amount of money to the ANC, there is no way something happens to them.
