Upgraded to a severe tropical storm. Expected to intensify into a cyclone later today.

A new TD has formed NE of Madagascar, in almost the exact same place as the last one. Will be watching this one to see what it does in the next few hours.

Update. The storm is now a TD (07). There is also an anti cyclone system close to Mauritius making the weather very unstable East of Madagascar.

TD07 is unlikely to cause major wind damage, but it will be quite wet (250mm+) in places:

TD 07 intensified into a Moderate TS (Eliakim) overnight. Moving towards Madagascar east coast. Expected to move down the coast before turning south east.

Contrary to the experts forecast, Eliakim has intensified to severe TS status, and, is now going to move in over land in Madagascar. It may weaken quite quickly before turning back south west. Meanwhile, the anti cyclone in the channel has also intensified.

Eliakim made landfall, weakened into an overland depression, moved south east back over water and intensified into a moderate TC. Currently moving south. The anticyclone has weakened but is causing heavy rains and flooding over Kenya.

Unusual to have so many cyclone warnings in a short space of time in these regions
My views are not cast in stone

Not really unusual, full list online: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South-...opical_cyclone

Every year numerous there are multiple tropical depressions (the weakest), a few tropical storms (stronger), and a handful of tropical cyclones (one or two destructive ones). They are part of the normal weather, without them some places would be too hot and dry to be habitable.

Eliakim intensified to a moderate tropical storm before losing oomph and has now been degraded to a tropical depression as it continues to move south east.

Meanwhile back in the engine room, there are two more systems showing signs of possibly developing into storms.
