‘It's my fault couple are missing’

Durban - One of the last people to see kidnapped British botanists Rod and Rachel Saunders alive blames himself for their Isis-linked abduction which he fears has led to their deaths.

“I feel incredibly guilty because I told them to go down to Ngoye Forest,” said Big Banana Films producer Robin Matthews, who spent three days filming and getting to know the Saunders couple who collect and catalogue indigenous plants for their Kenilworth-based business, Silverhill Seeds.

“It’s a birders’ and botanists’ paradise,” said Matthews, a University of Zululand BSc Zoology Honours graduate who lived in nearby Mtunzini and knows KZN’s Ngoye Forest region well.

“I’ve been there many times and after working with Rod and Rachel, I knew they would love it.

“But their love of plants and nature is what got them into trouble. And that’s hard to swallow.

“Because even though I know I could not have predicted Isis suspects were living there, I still feel responsible for sending them there.”

Kidnappers of UK couple discussed plans to 'kill the kuffar'

Durban – An affidavit in the alleged kidnapping case of missing Cape-based botanists, Rodney and Rachel Saunders, reveals chilling details of an alleged premeditated murder plot and collusion in disposing of their bodies.

While the couple has yet to be found, this is the first indication that the duel South African-British passport holders may no longer be alive, although technically they are still considered missing by South African authorities.

Sayefudeen Del Vecchio, 37, and Fatima Patel, 27, who are married under traditional Islamic law, and 19-year-old Thembamandla Xulu -- who lived with the couple -- have been charged with the alleged kidnapping, assault and robbery of the Saunders, who were last heard from on February 8.

Del Vecchio and Patel, who were arrested on February 15, at their homestead near Mtunzini just 130km north of Durban, are also facing terrorism charges. Xulu was arrested on February 26.

The trio appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for formal bail application.

An affidavit filed by investigative officer, Detective Warrant Officer Anuresh Lutchman, who is based in the Crimes Against the State Unit within the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (known as the Hawks), shows he opposed bail on several grounds.

Terror suspect moved from Westville Prison to C-Max in secret transfer

A threat to Durban’s Westville prison is thought to have prompted the secretive move of terror suspect and alleged Isis acolyte Sayfydeen Aslam del Vecchio to Kokstad’s Ebongweni “C-Max” prison last week.

The Verulam regional court heard on Thursday that 38-year-old Del Vecchio had been hastily shifted to the secure and isolated facility‚ unbeknownst to his legal team‚ prosecutors or Hawks investigators.

The facility is South Africa’s only super-maximum security prison and is regarded as one of the most secure in the southern hemisphere.

Located in the southern reaches of the province‚ the prison is home to some of the country’s most dangerous criminals.

There are no communal cells and offenders spend 23 hours a day locked behind solid metal doors — and when they do leave the cells‚ their shackles are never removed. The cells are underground‚ with the surface housing offices and other administrative buildings. If a prisoner makes an attempt at escape‚ the intricate security web around the facility is likely to put a swift end to it.

Del Vecchio’s mysterious move was highlighted by defence advocate Jay Naidoo‚ who said that his client had been moved without any notification.

Prison authorities claimed‚ he said‚ that the move came after a request from the prosecution team. “We have not been able to consult with our client and prepare an application for bail. It is highly inconvenient because it takes three hours to travel there from Durban‚” he said.

State advocate Adele Barnard refuted this‚ saying that they too had been unaware of Del Vecchio’s move to the maximum security facility. She said that “speculation” around the reason for the move‚ conveyed to the investigating officer by Correctional Services officials‚ was that Del Vecchio’s presence compromised the safety and security of Westville prison.

Magistrate Vallaraman Kathuravaloo denied an application by Naidoo to order that Del Vecchio be rehoused at Westville‚ saying that the discretion of prisoner placement rested with the Department of Correctional Services. He and his co-accused‚ Fatima Patel and Themba Xulu‚ are alleged to have masterminded the abduction of missing Cape Town couple Rod and Rachel Saunders.

Zululand teen denied bail in missing couple and terror cell mystery

An Mtunzini teenager who stands accused of having had a hand in the abduction and disappearance of Britons Rod and Rachel Saunders will remain behind bars until the culmination of his trial.

Themba Xulu’s application for bail was denied by magistrate Vallaraman Kathuravaloo in the Verulam Regional Court on Thursday.

The British couple‚ who have lived in Cape Town for a number of years‚ remain missing nearly six weeks after they disappeared in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Xulu‚ 19‚ and his co-accused Fatima Patel and Sayfydeen Aslam del Vecchio‚ are alleged to have kidnapped the couple‚ stolen their car and drained more than R700 000 from their bank accounts.

The latter two accused remain at the centre of the high-level terror probe‚ facing charges related to an alleged association with terror organisation Isis.

The learner‚ who was represented by Legal Aid attorney Mondli Mthethwa‚ is charged with theft‚ kidnapping and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Isis suspect in couple's disappearance leads cops to croc-infested Tugela River

Hopes of finding missing couple Rod and Rachel Saunders alive have all but slipped away with police charging a man linked to their disappearance with two counts of murder.

Ahmad Jackson Mussa‚ 36‚ who carries the ominous moniker “Bazooka”‚ appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s court on Monday.

He was arrested in a raid by Hawks counter-terror operatives at a hideway in Newlands‚ outside Durban.

Mussa‚ along with alleged Isis acolytes Sayfudeen Aslam del Vecchio‚ Fatima Patel and their teenage neighbour Themba Xulu‚ is accused of engineering the disappearance of the Cape Town-based British botanists in February.

Common lower than sharksh*t murderers, that's all they are.
There's your problem. Stoners are like brain damaged sloths on Prozac. Short of using them as garden gnomes - they have no real function.

Default Search continues for bodies in ISIS attack

The search for the bodies of a British-South African couple allegedly abducted and murdered by a gang of ISIS supporters is ongoing on the banks of the Tugela River.

Rodney and Rachel Saunders disappeared in February while searching for rare plants in the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains near Vryheid.

In the weeks since their disappearance, the Hawks Crimes Against the State Unit, Durban Serious Organised Crime Unit and Durban Crime Intelligence KZN have arrested four people with alleged links to the ISIS terrorist group in connection with their kidnapping.

Two of the suspects, Sayfydeen Aslam Del Vecchio (38) and his wife Fatima Patel (27), had been living in Umdloti for more than a year before their arrests.

Thembamandla Xulu (19) and Ahmad Jackson Mussa (36) were also arrested in connection with the crime.

Del Vecchio, Xulu and Patel were arrested at the end of February and a search of their rooms led to a five-week manhunt for Mussa, who was eventually found hiding out in Newlands.

Musa appeared in Verulam Magistrates court on Monday.

According to Hawks spokesperson captain Sipho Simphiwe, Musa led investigators to the banks of the Tugela, where the search for the bodies continues.

“The suspects have been charged with kidnapping and robbery.”

Simphiwe said the Hawks did not suspect any others were involved in the kidnapping. He would not speculate as to the possibility of there being more ISIS linked groups in KZN.

Del Vecchio lived in Umdloti last year when he allegedly torched Tongaat Hulett sugar fields worth about R2 million, after they demolished a tree house that he built in a forest between Umhlanga and Umdloti belonging to Tongaat Hulett.

A few Umdloti residents with knowledge of Del Vecchio’s activities had apparently kept their suspicions about his activities to themselves so as not to create panic.

This was until Del Vecchio apparently painted the ISIS logo on a Tongaat Hulett construction site.

The incident scared a number of residents and was reported to the Hawks.

However they only took notice of him when he later painted the ISIS logo on the King Shaka International Airport boundary.

Attorney rapped over the knuckles for ‘inappropriate’ behaviour in Isis case

Allegations of an attorney’s “unethical” conduct torpedoed the bail application of alleged Isis acolytes and murder accused Sayfudeen Aslam del Vecchio and Fatima Patel in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

The couple‚ at the centre of a high-level counter terrorism probe‚ are accused alongside their teenage neighbour Themba Xulu and cohort Ahmad Jackson Mussa of the murder of Britons Rod and Rachel Saunders.

All four now face murder charges on top of a raft of others including robbery with aggravating circumstances‚ kidnapping‚ theft and terror charges.

Magistrate Chris Annamalai openly dressed down attorney Nadeem Mohamed‚ acting on behalf of del Vecchio and Patel‚ for “consulting” with Mussa before his appearance. Annamalai said Mohamed was conflicted in that the fourth suspect‚ also known as “Bazooka”‚ had made a statement to police which incriminated Del Vecchio and Patel and he should never have entertained the consultation.

    Four face terrorism charges

DURBAN - POLICE forensic experts are conducting DNA tests to determine if the badly decomposed body accidentally found by a fisherman in the Tugela River is that of missing British botanist Rod Saunders.

Saunders, 74, and his wife, Rachel, 63, were allegedly abducted by Islamic State-linked suspects after they went missing while travelling around a remote KZN forest on February 10.

“No conclusive findings have been made yet,” said Hawks spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha.

“But we can confirm that DNA samples have been taken and sent to Pretoria for analysis to establish if the body is linked to the Saunders kidnap case.

“Investigators have also visited all morgues in the search area to determine if there are any other identified bodies that fit the time frame of the case.”

'Decomposed body is missing British botanist' - Hawks

Durban - The Hawks have confirmed that a body, found at the Tugela River in February, is that of missing UK botanist, Rodney Saunders. He and his wife, Rachel, went missing on February whilst they were in Kwazulu-Natal on a work assignment.

Hawks spokesperson, Captain Lloyd Ramovha, said the first set of forensic results were released on Wednesday. Saunders's body was found on February 17, by a local fisherman.

"Four suspects appeared in the Verulam Magistrate's Court on Wednesday. The Hawks’ intensive investigation led to the arrest of a couple; Sayfydeen Del Vecchio and Fatima Patel 38 and 27 respectively on February 16, following a raid at their dwelling. The pair has been in custody ever since they were arrested and they have appeared in court a few times," he said.

CIA or FBI ‘staged’ murder of Cape Town botanists‚ says murder accused

Alleged Isis acolyte and murder accused Sayfudeen Aslam Del Vecchio claimed on Wednesday that the kidnapping and murder of Cape Town botanists Rod and Rachel Saunders may have been staged by the CIA or FBI.

Del Vecchio was speaking in court where he‚ along with his wife Fatima Patel‚ and a boarder‚ Ahmad Jackson Mussa‚ are alleged to have kidnapped the elderly couple in February while they toured KwaZulu-Natal.

Mortal remains of Rod Saunders were found on the Tugela River banks and identified using DNA profiling.

Isis links of botanists' alleged killers 'exaggerated'

DURBAN - A former Northwood School learner and his partner, who are alleged to have Islamic State (Isis) links, are to appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court again this week, charged with murdering 74-year-old British botanist Rod Saunders and his wife, Rachel, 64.

Grim details about the couple’s disappearance have already been heard by Verulam magistrate Valaramen Kathravaloo during the bail application of Sayfydeen Aslam Del Vecchio, 38, and his wife, Fatima Patel, 27.

It is alleged that the couple, along with Ahmad “Bazooka” Mussa, abducted and murdered the Saunders, who were last seen alive in early February.

Del Vecchio and Patel also face charges under the Terrorism and Related Activities Act for allegedly flying an Isis flag at their Mtunzini homestead.

However, their attorney Yousha Tayob said the Isis allegation had been “exaggerated”.

Teen appears in court for well-known horticulturalists' kidnapping

One of the people accused of kidnapping world-renowned horticulturalists Rod and Rachel Saunders, made a brief appearance in the Verulam Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Themba Xulu, 19, was allegedly found in possession of cellphones belonging to the couple, shortly after police started investigating their disappearance. The couple has been missing since February.

The horticulturalists have South African and British citizenship and were allegedly kidnapped at or near the Bivane Dam in Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal.

Xulu is charged in connection with their disappearance along with 36-year-old Malawian Ahmad Jackson Mussa, and couple Sayefudeen Del Vecchio, 37 and Fatima Patel, 27. They face charges of kidnapping, assault and robbery.

No bail for Isis-linked couple accused of killing elderly botanists

DURBAN – Two of the suspects accused of kidnapping and killing husband and wife botanists Rodney, 74, and Rachel Saunders, 63, were denied bail at the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Magistrate Irfan Khallil told Fatima Patel, 27, and Sayefudeen Del Vecchio, 38, who are married in terms of Islamic rights, that he was satisfied there was strong prima facie evidence against them.

The suspects had not proven exceptional circumstances to warrant their release on bail, he said, as was required for a schedule six offence. Their release would “undermine public safety” and they might try to escape the country, he said.
