Default Critically ill man is former Russian spy

Critically ill man is former Russian spy http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-43295134

A man who is critically ill after being exposed to an unknown substance in Wiltshire is a Russian national convicted of spying for Britain, the BBC understands.

Sergei Skripal, 66, was granted refuge in the UK following a "spy swap" between the US and Russia in 2010.

He and a woman, 33, were found unconscious on a bench at a shopping centre in Salisbury on Sunday.

Zizzi restaurant in Salisbury has been closed by police "as a precaution".

The substance has not been identified, but Public Health England said there was no known risk to the public's health.

Wiltshire Police are investigating whether a crime has been committed. They said the pair had no visible injuries but had been found unconscious at the Maltings shopping centre.

They have declared a "major incident" and multiple agencies are investigating. They said it had not been declared as a counter-terrorism incident, but they were keeping an "open mind".

Col Skripal, who is a retired Russian military intelligence officer, was jailed for 13 years by Russia in 2006 for spying for Britain.

Sergei Skripal: Who is the former Russian colonel?

He was convicted of passing the identities of Russian intelligence agents working undercover in Europe to the UK's Secret Intelligence Service, MI6.

Russia said Col Skripal had been paid $100,000 for the information, which he had been supplying from the 1990s.

He was one of four prisoners released by Moscow in exchange for 10 US spies in 2010, as part of a swap. Col Skripal was later flown to the UK.

He and the woman, who police said were known to each other, are both in intensive care at Salisbury District Hospital.

erm, he would then be a British spy, in spy-vs-spy country you get claimed by the nation your deliver information to, not on, nor the one where you were born.

Of course "Russian spy" makes for better click bait ...

Perhaps they meant a Russian national working as a spy. Would Britain publicly admit he was spying for them?

    Too much Vodka?
There's your problem. Stoners are like brain damaged sloths on Prozac. Short of using them as garden gnomes - they have no real function.

Britain Threatens Retaliation Against Kremlin After Russian Spy Collapse

Fears of another Kremlin-sanctioned assassination attempt on British soil deepened Tuesday when it emerged that several emergency responders were hospitalized after dealing with an unconscious Russian spy suspected to have been exposed to an unknown substance.

An Italian restaurant and a pub in the center of the cathedral city of Salisbury remained cordoned off as detectives investigate what happened to Sergei Skripal, 66, who collapsed in broad daylight Sunday along with a younger woman who is believed to be his daughter.

Woman in Russian spy mystery is Sergei Skripal's daughter
Yulia Skripal, 33, discovered next to her father on bench in Salisbury, is in critical condition

The apparent poisoning of the pair follows the death of Skripal’s wife, Liudmila, in 2012. She arrived in Britain with her husband – who was swapped in 2010 as part of a spy exchange – and had lived with him in Wiltshire.

A certificate recorded the cause of her death on 23 October 2012, aged 59, as “disseminated endometrial carcinoma”. Skripal’s son also died recently, aged 43, on a visit to St Petersburg with his girlfriend, the BBC has reported
    Wow, how unlucky....

    From that article....

The Russian government passed new laws giving its agents a licence to kill enemies of the state abroad in 2006,
Just before the murder of Alexander Litvinenk...scary stuff.

Sergei Skripal was deliberately poisoned with nerve agent, say police

The former Russian spy Sergei Skripal was deliberately poisoned with a nerve agent in a case that is now being treated as attempted murder, the police counter-terrorism chief has said.

Scotland Yard assistant chief commissioner Mark Rowley said the police officer who was first to the spot where Skripal was found in Salisbury on Sunday afternoon was “seriously ill” in hospital. His condition had deteriorated, Rowley said, adding: “Wiltshire police are providing full support to his family.”

Describing the poisoning of Skripal and his daughter Yulia, as a major incident, Rowley said scientists had identified the substance used. He refused to reveal what the specific poison was.

All three were suffering from “exposure to a nerve agent”. Detectives now believed that Sergei and Yulia Skripal were specifically targeted, he added, in a deliberate act. They remain critically ill in hospital.
