question, in the US they use those really big vehicles, based on a freighliner truck,
why cant they adapt that locally?

we now get freight-liners locally here, why not copy one exactly?
Aren't they similar to ours in construction? Just looking menacing on the exterior like the rest of their vehicles?
    Yeah whatever mate

Thought it was an Audi? Think it might be refresh rate of the camera, saw another vid where the traffic lights were flashing like that as well

The problem is not the cost of the APC it is the cost to keep one running which is significantly higher in maintenance and fuel than a normal vehicle. The cost of a more expensive vehicle will immediately filter down to your banking fees etc.

The Reserve Bank uses a freight liner but it has a armed escort that actively blocks lanes around it and a chase helicopter due to the amount of money it carries. Also a larger truck might not be feasible for the daily routes they have to travel. The reserve bank is depot to depot, this is depot to ATM to store to ATM to store... It might be a better idea to reduce the size of the vehicle and cash carried it than to go bigger.

Regarding the US vehicles, I suspect they might be easier top open than the South African ones due to the lower threat environment they operate in.

I've a smaller blue truck few times on the N1. Wonder if that's the reserve bank as it is always travelling from pretoria toward Joburg but yes it travels with a heavy escort of black cars with blacked our windows and motor bikes ensuring the route is always clear around it.

Ekurhuleni - At least seven bags full of bank notes were spared during a daring cash-in-transit where a group of robbers bombed two cash vans in Boksburg this morning.

Police still don’t know how many bags of cash the robbers offloaded from the vans into their getaway vehicles.

“They managed to leave about seven bags behind and there are some notes left spread around the bombed vans,” said a police source on the scene.

The robbers had been travelling in several vehicles which included an SUV and BMW 5 Series when they cornered the cash vans in Atlas road around 10am. Shots were exchanged between the robbers and the security guards. The exchange of fire was recorded and posted on social media by onlookers. One security guard was injured

I think it exactly that, they somehow got hold of a car with flashing lights which they'll use to move people out of the way when making their escape.

There was a backup vehicle...won't go into too much detail. But they are woefully outgunned.
The cash you see on the road is Mickey Mouse compared to what they get away with. And no....the old dye system doesn't work well anymore..they get around that too via a few methods. They can also "wash" the notes to a certain degree.
More than one CIT robbery daily now. Very planned, very high up people involved. Old 'liberation' AK's coming out of hiding at a crazy rate.

ok, then what about a motorbike to do the small sites?
or one of those trike things? can be narrow and fast, and the bigger vehicle for the larger amounts of cash.

I mean its an arms race, explosive bomb VS small toyota dyna converted truck.
no contest, if they got something faster, like a bike or a fast car, wouldn't it be able to get away from those guys with guns?

I mean get a AMG merc C-Class estate converted, put 2 turbos on it, flashing blue lights, bullbars, and drive like your possessed....
or even a chevy lumina SS with bullbars?

maybe the idea the CIT guys have isnt the right one? small little Van with a tiny bit of armour
maybe it might work for small little jobs, but for bigger ones, you need a frikkin tank surely?

    just my 2C worth.

yup, they do their homework, have inside people, know the routes, how many follow vehicles - simple maths from there...

Problem is these guys no there is no repercussion for this - they can do it and get away with it... time to get some form of what the US has with SWAT - high powered vehicles with military trained personal that will get there and will kill them
