Also he doesn't realise that most of the rich in SA have people on retainer to ensure they pay less tax than us who work for bosses.

+100, but now since you've mentioned it he is going to do it purposefully to spite us.

There was a 7.14% percentage increase when VAT was increased from 14% to 15%

The VAT component of retail prices increased by 1/14 = 7.14%.
Retail prices in total increased by 0.8% (an item priced at R114 went up to R115 so the increase is 1/114).

It's not VATs fault at all!

Gov upped VAT so that they can make more money in order to pay for goods and services that now carry the increased VAT.

1% VAT increase = 10% increase in price of goods
10c petrol price increase = 10% increase in price of goods
5% inflation increase = 10% increase in price of goods
20c sin tax increase = 10% increase in price of liquor and smokes
Rand weaker = increase in price of goods
Rand stronger = increase in price of goods

My sympathy for retailers = 0%

So much of miss informed individuals in this thread. I can't for the life of me comprehend how some of you think that a 1% increase in VAT caused a collapse in retail sales...

    VAT is not the ISSUE!

I'll say it again, VAT is not the issue!
