The conclusion is that the days of someone, who has a internet connection, needing DStv because of "Sport" are long gone.
Most sports fans don't watch "the odd" sporting event. They follow them religiiously.

Football fans with DSTv catch pretty much every single EPL/La Liga game there is. Hell even I'm their right there with them when the Champion's League rolls about.

Fumbling with pirate streams every two days to catch a game is BS nobody wants to deal with.

To be fair, I wouldn't choose Netlfix over DSTv just because it is vastly superior. It's more a case of I would choose almost anything over DSTv, hell I'd sooner pay for a 24/7 stream of white noise than give a single cent to DSTv.

Sky Sports (UK) are on the more expensive side compared to other streaming sites. Any of the USA legal streaming services are cheaper and they include same or more content than DSTV - sports, series and movies. And there is no rummaging through 240p pirated sites looking for a decent stream.

Then you need the links. These are usually posted on the day of the event on sport specific reddits. I'll use the World Cup as an example for now:

    Go to: http://www.reddit.com/r/soccerstreams/

Look for your game, so lets say [12:00 GMT] Egypt vs Uruguay. Click the link...

The stream links look like this:

    [BBC] [520p] acestream://82ad68c3ab9662aa8216506520896ac92b0a27cd
    [BBC] [720p] acestream://f163f249dddff53909f72731bc494d3a371d39bb
    [BBC] [1080i 50fps] acestream://4d0931d57d994943772c9c0ff64f119759cf0d01
    [Fox] [720p] acestream://1c73ec0c80189c53de3689a70c08f040c3c0c9de

Copy the string (4d0931d57d994943772c9c0ff64f119759cf0d01 for the 1080p BBC broadcast)

Paste the string in the player.

Wait for the buffer and enjoy.

    For F1 you'll need the Motorsport reddit --> http://www.reddit.com/r/motorsportsstreams/
Thanks for the info. It may come in handy sometime. It looks like a really poor experience compared to DSTV though or other legal overseas options.

    Also, came across this:
    https://www.reddit.com/r/soccerstrea...ut_sodaplayer/

"It has been brought to our attention that SodaPlayer accesses your private files and e-mails without authorization.

Having realized this, we cannot in good conscience recommend using SodaPlayer till they fix this. We have also removed it as a recommended option from our Wiki."

No worries. Hadn't seen that reddit update, looking into it now...

    I need HD at least.

Which is why I gave it up altogether. Not worth the effort.

On the other end of the scale, R1,000 pm for something I watch once a week was not worth it.

I still reactivate it when there's a big tournament or something I'm really interested in. And then just stop paying when it's over...

This site alone removes 90% of the fumbling associated with finding a pirate stream. All you need to know is who is the broadcaster. Then there are the Reddit links as well.

You can easily find Sky Sports streams that are in 1080p/50 which blows the best you can find on DStv out the water. I streamed all 24-hours of the Le Mans race this weekend, and the MotoGP, in 1080/50-60, depending on what I watched. No buffering on my 20meg line and you can configure the player to save the stream to disk as well so you can go back and watch it again.

Could the deal between Supersport and DSTV be killing of local interest in sport? It seems only die hards watch and support these days, and these guys pay the DTSV premium where others refuse to.

As a result I dont watch local sport anymore, and this I squarely blame on the two parties mentioned above, not because of my hesitation to pay the bill..

    Good luck SA sport..
