I've been offgrid for a few years also, as those who read here will likely know already.
400k would be closer to 200k now for a nice offgrid system with sufficient power.

Its cheaper currently to go offgrid in Cape Town with storage than the per KW cost.
I've posted the calcs before, can lookup the thread again if any interest.

    Yeah...

But you did it intelligently, and didn't spend R400k 10+ years ago merely because you could...

Its almost getting to a break even point in Durban as well...

    Yeah, I spent 120k because I could

Want to dump the dead acid; I could do with replacing those with circa 30k in Lithium Batteries to hold me over the next 10 years, but otherwise I'm still pretty good.

That would probably be a waste if you don't use it often enough, considering that diesel can go vrot, and if you don't have a Diesel vehicle you have more hassles.
    Why go 100% off grid?
    Switch to pre-paid + partial off-grid.
    Use grid for heavy loads.

Prepaid seems like more of a hassle and prone with a variety of errors (payments systems down, residential box not communicating with meter and whatever else), while postpaid just has one type of error (overbilling). TUM are back charging some Tshwane PREPAID users cause they can't even measure things right.

Otherwise I fully agree, light power use systems totally off grid, heavy use (like laundry stuff) on grid.

I'd go off grid just so I wouldn't have to deal with the council. I'd not care about pay back - if I could afford it.

Pretty much my reasoning. I never had electricity installed on my plot, so I won't get raped^H charged that daily charge.
