Again, an 'automated' house is no different to any other house, if the power goes out, stuff goes off and don't work anymore. Just like in a non-automated house.

So the question of backup power is the same for an automated or non-automated house. Solar, batteries, backup generator, etc.

I had an 8088xt I installed an ISA expanded memory expansion board into my ISA slot. I then created a ramdrive then copied all my game data off the 1.4mb stiffy drive into the RAMDRIVE.
My game was instantly super fast. It was Larry on steroids. I vaguely remember comparing speeds against those old hard drives big bulky stuff with two comms cables) I forgot it's interface name IDE maybe? The best early virtualization experience ever.
They were MFM (Modified Frequency Modulation) drives. And sounded super cool!

Yup, creating a RAM disk was super cool and I did the same. I even expanded my XT to boot with 768KB of RAM. Oh, how I laughed at those poor souls with their mere 640KB of RAM!

No, but wouldn't that be cool. Wonder if they'd still be working though?

There are so many from the hey-day of computing. But, personally, I'd be keen to get my hands on the proto-home computers, AIM, KIM, MK14, Altair and even an Apple I !

Basically the systems that informed and led to the proper home computer era, I'd guess from about 74/75 to about 78/79.

Always easy to speak with hindsight but I think the writing was on the wall about mobile so I would've kept control of - the then still to be formed - Vodacom and it's precursors that were then around.

But it's a difficult question, 1991 is a long time ago, so easy to get the dates and activities confused. The VANs battles were quite a while later, right?

I see that you have mentioned Voice Activation twice in this thread. Do you know that there are localized solutions for automatic speech recognition and text-to-speech in South Africa? We have a few research institutions that have been actively involved in R&D in the field from about 2001. There are also local commercial solutions. You are welcome to PM me for more information (I am involved in this field).

    Thanks
Thanks, will do so. I built a Dragon based system for myself and some others with full home automation integration but the new generation systems are substantially better.

We wrote that front end when MS Java was all the rage. And i've been too lazy to update it. If it works, don't fix it.

1999 was VANS kickoff. But 1997 was the SEP deal that saw Thintana strip the company.

This was a fun thread you follow. Thanks for the insights.
53.91% of South Africans voted in favour of the Nkandla compound and SABC censorship.
