Hi Folks,

Just want to find out what your thoughts are about Telkom advertising on MyADSL? They would like to advertise in March but I've told the agency acting on their behalf that we would have to check with all of you first.

So let me know what you think and we'll take it from there ...

Regards,

Cara

I'd say only with guarantees (of the truly legally binding sort) that they'd have representation on the forums and a mandate to cater to customer needs, queries and complaints.

If possible with the condition that should they fail to uphold their end, the advertisement contract is terminated on the spot.

Ultimately it's the staff's choice though. It could help relationships with Telkom but then again it may just end up with us getting screwed more.

If they would be prepared to be properly represented on the forums and actually answer people's questions honestly, then maybe. Otherwise, no way.

Tell them to &*$^&Y)JHGR0fjh0h9o off

This forum generally maintains high standards as far as the members are concerned. I think the same criteria should be applied to advertisers as well.

Unfortunate Telkom's current level of morality does not fit this profile. Unfortunately their motive for advertising here would ultimately be profit motivated. Would hate for them to fleece any unsuspecting visitors to the site.

If they do advertise I will simply deploy the ad blocker in protest, I do this for every Telkom ad I see.

I don't think asking them to have a representative on the site is enough, they will simply install a Lulu clone and give "it" a standard set of sanitized answers to copy and paste.

They should offer a 50% discount to all MyADSL subscribers and a 10% kickback on that fee going to the forum coffers.

So in short ....... I say nay !

That's why I say the membership should be enforced. If they don't keep up a certain standard they are canned.

And with assurances that they don't put some media spin on it that they are now "supported by MyADSL" or something.

no - why do they want to advertise on myadsl? because their advertising agency / media planners say it is a great place to be seen as it becomes ever more popular. because it will help them to move product. so in a cute marketing irony the site that sprung up purely because of telkom has become a desirable vehicle for promoting it.

no - what have telkom ever done in respect of myadsl? they have made promises which have fallen through - representation being a case in point - and they have twisted and spun the results of surveys ("even our biggest critics"). they certainly have not really engaged with it or shown it any respect....

no - is telkom doing anything different from 2003 when the site was started? Hell no. No respect for the adsl regs. Predatory pricing wherever they can get away with it (think international) etc etc etc. Customercentric?

will it make any difference to telkom if they cannot? no...
will it make a difference, if only one of principle, if myadsl says no? i think it will

No, it's hypocrisy to think of such a thing.
Imagine them boasting in the newspapers and articles how they are in collaboration with MYADSL.

Please make a poll :)

IMO Telkom should not be allowed to advertise. They have in the past twisted the results of MyADSL polls to suit their purposes. Who knows how they will use the fact that they were allowed to advertise?

Please, no Telkom ads.

Methinks MyADSL needs the money more than us.

So, what we do is allow Telkom to advertise.

Then we block their adverts at browser/firewall level.

Problem solved - MyADSL gets their money, and we don't see stinking adverts :D

My initial knee-jerk reaction was to deny them their request, but my solution above will be giving us more satisfaction - and give myadsl a financial boost when needed. :D

But if it won't be practically feasible, then we deny them their request, this should send out a clear signal.

Hear hear.

Well said.

On the other hand were they to bribe registered formites with free uncapped broadband at their highest speed, free for life, then my priciples could change :D

Thanks for the feedback

Hi guys

I was away and I see Cara took the initiative to address this issue. Thanks for the feedback and the answer is clearly an overwhelming No. We will inform the agency that ‘our members have spoken’ :D

Thanks again for the prompt feedback and the great suggestions as to what Telkom should do if they want to ‘reach’ the MyADSL-MyBroadband community through advertising.

Regards,

RPM

Stuff them.
We all can't wait for them to go down and disappear.
It would be like Hitler advertising on jewish T.V.

A strong NO. I think that would be a wrong/bad business decision for myadsl... it would be hypocritical.

There is something ironic to let them finance a forum that is so openly critical of them:)

However unless they were also prepared to provide a forum representative who could provide honest answers (which based on my experience is very unlikely) i do not think it should be allowed.

I'd say yes but ONLY if they do online support and have a rep on the forums minimum during office hours, even if only for ADSL.
