Standard Bank launches virtual credit card with enhanced security features

it would be nice if, when you request to see the CVV, and you punch in the OTP to allow it, THAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE THE DAMN CVV!!!! (instead of the 3 stars/***)

WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom are the top apps for voice calls in South Africa

Spam calls also contribute to this. Block all unknown numbers for normal calls, and WhatsApp will still allow unknown numbers through. At least when you report the number, WhatsApp does something about it

Meta names Shengjia Zhao as superintelligence chief scientist

Thanks. I was looking at his 2016 bachelors and thinking, “wtf have I been doing with my life?” 😂 Joking aside, co-author on original ChatGPT paper, key contributor on o1, plus (I’m guessing) MS upgraded to PhD all at that age tells me he’s an amazingly smart/genius level kid, but likely...

South Africa's limited implementation of local AI technology could see it lose AI talent to the rest of the world

There’s truth in what he said. I’ve seen decision-makers opt for inferior foreign solutions over stronger local alternatives; perhaps because it felt politically safer? 🤷‍♂️ It’s a bit like the old “no one gets fired for choosing IBM” mindset: theres often a perception that international...

Cape Town publishes IPP tenders in load-shedding mitigation plan

iirc, they said they want to offset 4 stages of loadshedding by the end of 2024. Now it’s 2026… almost like the trains that are always 15mins away :cautious:

    Machine learning / vision fundis

Have a look at TROCR and docTr, both can run locally. The former requires you to do a bit of training for the weights, the latter works right off the bat (resnet50 with rotation will handle angled forms). These simply perform ocr and it’d be on you to handle making sense of the forms. On the...

Anybody Else Have Early Access To New Bing (ChatGPT)?

Still awaiting my invite, if I’ll ever get it. Biding my time by reading responses like this; I find it damn funny, sad, creepy and worrisome all at the same time

South Africa starts testing its new Rapid Payments Programme

Sure, u can use your phone number, but any other unique identifier can work too. Register a random UUID with your bank if you so choose. I'll be using using [email protected], or 0812345678, coz some devs will forget to update production configs.

    Protea Men tour of England

The curse of the South African touring party taking out the English skipper remains intact. Too soon? RIP, she had a masterful innings

What questions to ask a mentor in web development, specifically Aspects of JavaScript

I think this is the general theme among most devs who've been in the industry long enough  I feel you. In fact, you're reminding me of what's in store for me tomorrow :p Maybe it's just SA... I imagine overseas that the powers that be prefer one focuses solely on their core. Others...
