    Prepaid Electricity rip-off.

My question exactly. The rate per unit does not change. In summer I'll use the same household appliances so I'll still be paying the same amount. So where is this extra money going? They produced a bill from December 2018 showing that the complex consumption was 36000 kWh as compared to 52000...

I don't think so. Will have to ask. But I'm pretty sure they're shared as the blocks are 3 stories high and one geyser unit with panel is quite large. You could be on to something here. If they're shared, then it's no wonder the the geysers are drawing so much current.

They're all the solar type that fits on the roof.

This is what I was thinking. I'll even pay for the installation of a meter to measure my geysers usage. It need not be They did say that rewiring the entire unit to fit a prepaid model was far too costly. I really don't think simply intercepting the power supply to my geyser would be that big...

Just some feedback to everyone who took interest: They sent 2 representatives along with a member of the complex management to meet with me and discuss the charges. They explained that Eskom has varying rates and the solar geysers are drawing backup current that is not metered. Fair enough, I...

    Prepaid Electricity rip-off.

Again, I have spent R800 so far. I only moved in on the 1st of July, so I cannot tell you the final bill per month. I'll probably hit R1000+. As it stands, I'm paying R400 more per month than I'm used to. That's going to increase by 31 July. Regardless, my colleagues, brother and many other...

    Prepaid Electricity rip-off.

I don't think so. I have monitored my daily usage since moving in and it is approximately 4-6 units per day. That's 6x30days = 180 units per month (upper limit). Let's further round that up to 200 units per month, a fairly normal amount for a single person in a small apartment. At a "normal"...

I've only just moved in there so I haven't had to fill it yet, but I believe we can fill it through any service provider of our choice. We don't actually pay money to the complex for gas.

Yes, I agree. But I think I'll have to move... I don't think I can win this fight. It looks like they've been getting away with it for a long time judging from the way that guy speaks about it. South African "entreupreneurship" I guess.

As far as I know it's illegal for any complex to charge higher than the rate that a licensed provider (i.e. Eskom, City Power etc.) charges. The principle manager of the property is not allowed to make a profit on the cost of electricity. They are supposed to make their costs for any additional...

    Prepaid Electricity rip-off.

Hi all, I recently moved into a new apartment complex and I noticed that I was getting very few units of electricty for a lot of money. Upon further investigation I found out that the cost per unit of the prepaid meter is set far higher than Eskom's/Municipality's rate. Just to give you an...
