Gerrit Dirk van der Veer, the man who helped install the first ARPANET link in South Africa

People are helping those people. Especially the surviving family. A memorial service is regularly held at the Rand Airport. Many people attend and it helps the families to know that their loved ones are not forgotten. Regular ceremonies are held in South Africa in remembrance of people who...

Gerrit Dirk van der Veer, the man who helped install the first ARPANET link in South Africa

Gert van der Veer received an award for his services to Aviation. He is an unassuming man. I worked for SAA in the Flight Operations section at the time of the Helderberg tragedy. Mr van der Veer arranged a flight to Mauritius to enable the relatives of the deceased the opportunity to visit the...

I have heard that if you advise Eskom that you won't be feeding back then you might be able to change to prepaid

What was your pay increase this year?

2% increase on pension. Luckily I have investments and a reasonable pension.

Have you ever had a parcel lost or stolen?

Yes. Clothing items sent from UK to SAPO branch. The UK company then notified customers that delivery to SA was not available. This happened about ten years ago.

MTN Talksure - is this a franchise?

I have an MTN business contract for my phone. I let the contract lapse about 10 years ago and as soon as it lapsed I started getting messages about renewing it. None of these messages were from MTN. I managed to contact MTN and told them that I was not interested in renewing my contact. I still...

SANEDI's Sampson Mamphweli says blocking Eskom's R54-billion settlement with Nersa will come back to haunt South Africans

I am looking forward to being haunted. Eskom is a nightmare and personally I don't like them. SANEDI sounds dodgy.

Households that spend around R1,800 on their utilities can save money with solar, even when finance with a loan

Not controversial, but the radiation propagates via the house wiring. The wall faces away from the rest of the house. I think this is going way off the topic. The best way to purchase a backup power system is to pay cash and do the installation yourself. We paid cash, but the installation was...

Households that spend around R1,800 on their utilities can save money with solar, even when finance with a loan

I believe that is the case, the Victron has a heavy iron core transformer and I have been told that it fits my situation. Unfortunately the cost is high, and I can't justify replacing our Sunsynk.

Households that spend around R1,800 on their utilities can save money with solar, even when finance with a loan

It is in the garage. Which is about 15M from where I use the radio. There is a concrete floor with rebar between the inverter and the radio. This is a worldwide problem.

Households that spend around R1,800 on their utilities can save money with solar, even when finance with a loan

I have a very sensitive radio. The radio is used for various tasks for which I have a licence issued by ICASA. Reception is severely compromised by the interference. Everyday listeners to local radio are usually not affected by this interference. You can Google RF interference caused by power...

Households that spend around R1,800 on their utilities can save money with solar, even when finance with a loan

RF interference is generated by most inverters. They use switch mode power supplies. SMPS power supplies are widely used due to cost and weight. The interference can be reduced but most people are not affected by the RF noise. I am affected due to my hobby.

Households that spend around R1,800 on their utilities can save money with solar, even when finance with a loan

You are right. I was looking at the manuals today. Self-install is not for us due to the height of the roof and other factors. We were very frustrated with load shedding. I eventually decided to take the plunge. Personally I wouldn't use any financing scheme due to past experience with motor...
