Icann calls for transparency in Afrinic board elections

    > ICANN has that. Don't know about Afrinic. ICANN the public organization with its umpteen committees and stake holders... sure. Its bloated, slow and dysfunctional but mostly works (eventually). ICANN the not for profit Californian corporation that runs all that ... The only thing good...

Huawei silent on concerns about backdoors in inverters

Guys I just checked. My Victron can be shutdown remotely as well. I think the Dutch are secretly working with the Chinese. Or this is pure clickbait and every solar system that can be managed remotely via an app can in theory also be shutdown by a bad actor.

    Denial-of-service attack aimed at .ZA

Pretty sure Google's public cloud dns has been taking strain. Probably targeting a wide enough range of IPs that the rate limiters at all the dns providers have trouble catching it.

BYD set to launch sub-R400,000 EV in South Africa

55kw and 15second 0-100kmh !! This is really really going to suck on the highway.

The Internet consumer protection group fighting fraudulent websites

Back in the mid 2000s I was working at a large well known hosting company when I noticed some weird traffic patterns on a suspended website mostly by accident while tracking an unrelated issues.. After a bit of tracking I discovered it was these fools. Here's the thing: 1) We had shutdown the...

Kgosientsho Ramokgopa wants to speed up grid expansion in the Cape

Liar liar pants on fire. The lack of capacity of the transmission lines magically appeared just after the first solar plants went on line. That was several years ago. He should be announcing the completion by now. I know its not as simple as buying few extension leads from Spar but its still...

South African universities computer science and engineering rankings - January 2024

Maybe the Wits guys were too busy toy-toying in Senate House to get rated? From the limited contact I've had with qualified CS people the UJ and UP guys have all been pretty impressive from a real world POV. It always felt like Wits emphasized academic over real world knowledge.

South Africa's first mini reactor could be online by 2026 — Report

Agreed. Kusile with all its overruns has been about R27 Millon/MW vs R112 Million/Mw for PBMR. Going to need a very VERY long life for the cheaper fuel to save money.

South Africa's first mini reactor could be online by 2026 — Report

From what I can gather:* A single 9g Uranium pebble the size of a billiard bill costs about $40 (2022) and generates the same energy as 5 tons of coal ($400/ton in March 2022 or $125/ton currently). With none of the air emissions. A normal load for 3 years is a little over 4 tons of these...

    Huawei P60 Pro review

This. My P30 pro from 4 years ago is still better overall than my new S23+ but I need the play store for work. Has anyone tried getting the full gsuite / Google workplace onto the newer Huaweis?

Top mirrorless camera brands available in SA

If the mirror-less cameras have fewer moving parts why are they so much more expensive than SLRs?

Huawei could face even tighter US restrictions

My favorite conspiracy theory is that this is to annoy the Chinese enough that they invade Taiwan. Then they get to block the all imports from China and they can try convince TSMC to move all operations to the US.

Joburg seeks funding for R401-million plan to mitigate three stages of power cuts

Exactly and why are they not letting us feed the spare power back into the grid? Is the DA mayor also selling Tendaaas?
