I think only Vumatel trenched uses active optical network (aon) as opposed to all the others that uses passive optical network (pon). Aon is by far the more advanced but each has its pros and cons.. I think the pros with aon outweigh the cons though :)
Vumatel has a R1760 installation fee to bring the fibre into the home. This is a permanent fixture and adds value to the home. You should try and negotiate with the landlord that he pay part or all of this cost. Vuma would in any case need his signature to do the installation. Beware any ISP...
Unfortunately most of us only come here with our problems. After initial problems with Vuma and the CPE that was sorted with the help of PBCool I have not had a single problem that was not on my side. Low latency and very good down and upload speeds internationally. Go Cool Ideas!
Donald Trump is one of the best presidents the USA have ever seen. Look past the leftist mainstream media and you will see it clearly. If SA could have borrowed him for 6 months and given him dictator status this country would be turned around and not face a wheelbarrow economy.
Vuma CPE installation is R 1760 btw - after our vat increase. Trust me - if you go with an isp that will cover this cost you are going to cry! Connection fee R 999 is paid by most providers including Cool Ideas.
Bite the bullet and move :) Im with Cool Ideas on Vumatel trenched and get full download speed to london on 50/50 Line upload will be between 30-40 Mbps. A well seeded torrent will max the line out at 6.25 MB/s
Still a concern that you dont get a connection when connecting directly to the CPE bypassing the router. Im sure you have tried the obvious... tested with a different LAN cable? :)
Not sure if this will be of any help...but yes you have to set the router to connect via DHCP... it wont be default.

I am not an expert but from what i understand is that if the CPE was connected directly to the PC the line would be locked to the MAC address of your network card. It would not see the router at all. How did you order the service from Afrihost? Via the vumatel shop? If this is the case you...
