Are smart cases that big a deal? I understand that it's nice that it wakes up as soon as you open it and, and screen goes off when you close it, but half the time I just let mine go into standby by iteslf, and the press of a button isn't that big a deal. Well for me it doesn't validate the price...

No, Using a SA account :/ Can one just create another account with US details, or is it more complicated than that? Unfortunately I did not of the limitations of an SA account when I got my IPad :)
I can't remember the exact amount, but you are generally allowed to bring in up to R3000 (open to correction) without paying duties. Anything in excess of this you generally have to pay local VAT and a fixed admin fee (don't think it's too much). So 14% at what ever exchange rate SARS are using...
