Monthly Solar Production - Show us yours

Unfortunately just a few days of cold, cloudy weather sent me from zero grid usage to almost 100kWh.

SALGA files application to block AARTO rollout on 1 July 2026

While I'm not a fan of AARTO, I'm even less of a fan of municipalities dishing out fines as a revenue making exercise.

    Do you bet on sports?

Rarely. Usually before the start of a tournament I'll look and see if there are any odds that are worth taking on an outright winner. Nice wins were Germany for the 2014 World Cup and Max Verstappen for the 2021 F1 Championship. Both were relatively long shots at the start which paid out...

Motorists shouldn’t buy these cars in South Africa – According to the AA

They did call it out a few months back https://aa.co.za/aa-raises-deep-concerns-as-toyota-corolla-cross-scores-two-stars-for-adult-protection-in-africa/

Gautrain stations to get significant upgrades

I can’t comment on the business model. I simply disagree with the sentiment that transportation infrastructure has to be a profit making endeavour.

Gautrain stations to get significant upgrades

Why should it break even or make a profit? Do the roads?

    coj off-grid process

Fixed costs are unfortunately going to keep killing you until you disconnect fully, which at 200kWh of grid usage monthly isn't going to happen any time soon. Next best thing would have been a switch to prepaid but given COJ's stance on that, it's next to impossible.

Amazon reveals Prime Day exclusive deal date for South Africa

I'm hoping that given Amazon is still working on gaining market share in SA they'll have some loss leaders to encourage uptake. Guess we'll see come end of the month.

Monthly Solar Production - Show us yours

Hard to tell if it's the new batteries or the mild temperatures and sunny days (likely a combination of both), but I'm happy that my grid usage dropped significantly in May

Really bad news for medical aid members in South Africa

Even more annoying is the sub-limits. I needed two in one year so then you get told that even though you have R20k in your MSA, you've reached the sub-limit for dental devices so pay the second one out of pocket.

    What was your first job?

Delivering pizzas straight out of my Matric finals. I still look back on that job fondly because the owner was great and the coworkers were decent too. No micromanaging, just get the goods drive to drop them off, rinse and repeat.

High fuel prices may lead to petrol station closures across South Africa

Either card upfront if the amount is yet to be determined, or cash upfront if you're putting in a set amount (like taxis do). Will fix the issue in the article too where
