Mecer 1000va offline ups - mute beeping?

Can anyone tell me how to connect my Mac to my UPS (Mecer 1000 VU) so that I can change the default beep settings? I have the ViewPower software, I have the USB cable that came with the UPS (new Mac only has USB ports) but a can't seem to get the two talking to each other.
