How many submarine cables link our Republic to the world?

What a surprize when I was reminded of my ignorance (once again) by my brother in his familiar condescending tone to us mere mortals! I also had the honour of being told that all nine of these cables are fibre optic, which I suspected, but now know. Most have more than one landing point on our...

RSA has some of the highest quality coal on Earth, with a black lustrous appearance

According to the USGS RSA has some of the greatest potential for ocean derived energy. This includes a long coast line, very strong and predictable currents, and deep water close to the coast. We also have vast resources of titanium, in the mineral form of TiO2. Titanium is one of the best...

RSA has some of the highest quality coal on Earth, with a black lustrous appearance

Some of RSA's coal suppliers are Germany, India, China, Botswana. Germany has some of the lowest quality coal ever discovered. It is referred to as lignite and its energy density is shockingly poor. It also has vast amounts of extremely hazardous impurities, like Arsenic, Antimony, Lead...

Anthracite is a very good example, it is the purest form of naturally occuring coal. The energy density of coal varies very widely by quality and purity. This makes our import/export ratio even less rational, economically speaking.

Many counties export coal, and import coal for domestic use, but only if it costs less to do so, eg. US, Indonesia, Vietnam.

Almost all the coal Eskom uses is imported. Sasol uses mostly Natural gas piped from Mozambique, but they do use a small amount of local coal.

RSA has some of the highest quality coal on Earth, with a black lustrous appearance

Our Republic is among the 5 largest exporters of coal on Earth, and our coal tops all lists of grade, purity, energy density, etc. Why import most of locally used coal at about 4 to 5 times the average cost? By GDP we are ranked 32nd in the world, our total CO2 emissions are the 6th highest...
