From 35 million to zero: MTN’s first failed super app came as voice revenues plummeted

Here again the operator invented term of "over-the-top". There is no such thing - only internet. They keep trying to sway the narrative into this "over-the-top" nonsense as if the world owes them more than what they are already being paid. They are paid to move data from point A to point B. They...

Checkers Sixty60 is generating more revenue per year than Takealot

Eh? Seeing that a lot of people are suddenly not driving to PnP or Woolworths and using Sixty60 instead I would say that for Checkers it is new generated revenue...

Serious problem with new spam call rules in SA

For calls that Truecaller don't block I press the answer button. I dont pick up the phone. I go make coffee or something and leave my phone so they can talk to the air. Gotta support the cellphone networks with their declining voice revenue.

Serious problem with new spam call rules in SA

How do you report somebody if you have very little valid information on them? Does anybody in their right mind think these spam callers give you the true and correct information? And the number they dial from is useless.

AA CEO says the expropriation of land, with compensation, for Gautrain expansions will negatively impact Gauteng residents

Conflict of interest? Anyway eminent domain is a thing in pretty much all countries and it is the only way to get big infrastructure projects done.

South Africans could travel almost triple the distance in an electric car with R100 worth of electricity compared to petrol

CoCT really punishes complexes. We have a complex - each house has to pay fixed connection charge. Then our complex need to pay for a commercial connection at like R4500 per month as well. So if you live in a complex you are essentially getting double charged - part of it just comes through the...

South Africans could travel almost triple the distance in an electric car with R100 worth of electricity compared to petrol

Battery is going to last longer than that. Besides with the speed at which battery prices are dropping you will probably be able to replace the battery in 10 years time for less than you spent on oil, air filters, spark plugs, cam belts etc over 10 years on petrol car.

Penalty fees for users who cancel cellphone contracts prematurely

Seeing that phones are not subsidized anymore I really think there is a case to be made that the service contract and the device financing must be seperated. Because it feels like a lot of the provisions of the NCA is circumvented by "service contracts" that is actually about device financing.

Shoprite doesn't own any of the solar panels on the roofs of its stores and distribution centres

Aaarrggghhh. People saying "it is opex" as if that is always the right thing. Especially in cloud people will smile "opex" as if it is a universal advantange. No. Opex vs Capex depends on the business, their cost of capital, their IRR, their spending priorities etc etc. I always cringe when...

Shoprite doesn't own any of the solar panels on the roofs of its stores and distribution centres

It doesn't feel like a lot of solar considering Checkers/Shoprite scale. Or am I smoking my socks.

Capitec is facing competition from three large South African companies targeting a similar market

I wouldn't worry too much about Capitec :) It is amazing that more than 50% of their profit doesn't come from retail banking but from VAS/Insurance/Mobile. And they are expanding internationally. Keeping my shares. #NotInvestmentAdvice #DontMessWithStellenboschMafia

SpaceX at $100 would imply zero AI Value, Morgan Stanley says

Haha ok - if you like the pain of small Llm models. Yes they have their niche but man - R3k kan buy you a lot of tokens on openrouter of more capable models. But I guess there is something cool about small Llms if you are willing to push through the pain  The hat is really cool though...

Cape Town tribunal approves Equinix data centres despite activist objections

This is crazy. It is land already zoned for industrial use. It is surrounded by other industrial buildings. It is not as if it is farmland, or nature reserve or housing area being converted to industrial use. I understand that the AI data centers is getting out of hand in the US. But very...

SpaceX at $100 would imply zero AI Value, Morgan Stanley says

For LLMs? Good luck with that 🙃 Brilliant for object detection etc. But for LLMs you want the cheapest high volume high bandwidth RAM money can buy. And Raspberry Pi's aint it.
