What cars cost when the Rand launched 63 years ago

That's for the States, I think. Here, it was maybe 4 times worse , but also decreasing. NITRR used to keep track of that.

South Africa experimented with high-speed trains between 1978 and 1985

I think it was Minister Hendrik Schoeman who motivated the experiments. Technically a success but as mentioned in the article, all slow trains had to be cleared off the line, and that wasnt possible on a continuous basis. And in view of the Vodacom / Makate fish, Dr Scheffel got an ex-gratia...

Eskom’s plan to force people to switch off geysers and home appliances

This is an old (very old) strategy. I was brought up in the 1950s in Pinelands, then an independent Municipality, which bought its electricity from Cape Town. The price was based on the maximum current draw, so the Muni installed Ripplay relays (switches) to turn off geysers at peak times. In...

Electric recharging vs petrol refueling costs from Johannesburg to Cape Town

This is nothing to do with electric cars, but I've noticed that if there is a CoOp in a town, the diesel prices are overall cheaper than when there is no CoOp. But it's still worth doing some homework and finding the CoOP's on your route; they offer a really significant saving

South Africa in UN agreement to reduce speed limits - RTMC

Half of the deaths on SA 's roads are pedestrians. A pedestrian has little chance of surviving a 30kmh hit. Lowering speed limits by a mere 10kmh will not reduce the death rate for this half . What might help, is cheap reflective jackets, and arrests for drunk walking. No fines, just a night in...
