Oh, I didn't know that. Interesting -- the long delay does raise an eyebrow. I'd really like to support Ubuntu, because I think Canonical is still among the leaders in making Linux accessible to the average user like me, but it seems like some more monitoring is in order to see how they...
After testing Ubuntu out on an old family laptop, the main reason I opted for Fedora on my personal gaming and productivity desktop was because of Ubuntu's buggy and frustrating fork of Gnome Software. Seeing as their new in-house software centre seems to be one of the major improvements in...
Well, that seems to confirm my suspicions. I am by no means a tech-savvy person, but what the hell? Was it really that much of a burden to carry on supporting Linux?
Thanks for sharing your experience, and braving the customer service rabbit hole. What a pity, though. I'll really miss having...
Hello Internet,
I'm hoping some other fellow Linux users or clever clogs might be able to help me out.
After years with no issues, as of today, Showmax no longer plays videos on my browser, producing the following error message:
"Sorry, your system configuration is not compatible with Showmax...
Ja, open-source AMD drivers (Mesa, I think it's called) are included and updated with the Linux kernel. On my other SSD, I had to first download the corresponding drivers from AMD's website before Windows 10 would even recognise my new GPU.
This would have been really helpful about a month ago (several people spoke highly of Wootbooks' quality, but not many about running Linux), but I think I probably still made the right call just upgrading my desktop for now. It's great to know you've had such a good experience with Linux...
Always nice to come across another local Linux user. Most people just look at me funny.
Glad to hear things have gone smoothly for you. :) Installing Linux is of course much simpler on a laptop with only an iGPU. I've had no problems at all with either Ubuntu or Linux Mint on an old HP ProBook...
Thanks! It's very useful to have a summary of a device life cycle like this. It really does seem like they are just a cut above other laptops in this price range -- both in their hardware and build quality. Based only on that, and other people's experiences, I'm very tempted.
The only snag is...
Thanks for going into a bit more detail. :)
The little wrinkle in all of this is wanting to run Linux (while keeping Windows as a backup in case I need it for something specific), and I'm unsure how smooth the experience with drivers would be. On the one hand, Linux device retailers like...
Hm, how dire is it to not get regular BIOS/firmware updates? (This is a little new to me.) I'm a little concerned what this might mean if I were to run a Linux distribution on the other SSD. I don't want to have to struggle an unreasonable amount to get basic functions working.
Going by price-to-performance alone, Wootware's laptops are a better deal than anything else I've come across. And based on the few reviews I could find online, the Tongfang chassis that Wootware's laptops use is made of a magnesium alloy.
Hm, so several of us out there eyeing them, but not yet sure... Their return policy and responsiveness of a sales rep over email on some questions I had do count for a lot.
Hey folks,
My gaming desktop has finally become too long in the tooth to keep up with modern titles, and I'm strongly considering using this opportunity to buy a gaming laptop. Although upgrading my desktop would be cheaper, the portability of laptops (especially given that I would like to work...
