    Want to Cry

+1 for NPM. Upgraded option: NPMplus with OpenAppSec as docker containers -- fun to see what attacks it blocks. Takes a bit to get going, but worth it. Or look at Pangolin (I'm looking at it for the iot stuff at work).

    Spam from simbconsulting.co.za

Please remove the link incase others click through and somehow fall for it. Possibly whois scraped the domain and use a compromised business email account (common from phishing; check the mail headers and through aka.ms/mha) an sent spam to whatever they could find on that domain. Or just...

Plan to move away from physical vehicle licence discs in South Africa

Considering it is supposedly easy to get fake/clone plates and added time for the "random" inspection, a paper disc is still a better tax token. A disc is easy enough to read by the "inspector" when stopping, barely looking at the date. Imagine now the dirty/greasy phone camera lense with the...

    Car work - price check

Offhand the labour time isn't bad. Parts prices meh... oils and additives meh pricing (don't think the motorfactors will be much cheaper unless there are specials -- some dealerships are cheaper when buying entire service kits). Brake discs can be found cheaper for generics. Would I do an...

Did you buy your last car with cash or on a finance plan?

^ Best option ^ when doing h-p. Pre pay and if you get hit with a big bill (like a turbo) then you have the repayments prepaid and can ask for a payment holiday to recovery.

Did you buy your last car with cash or on a finance plan?

Cash for the last 3 cars. No financing since mid 2010's. I would rather swallow the costs/risks of no warranty and service plans, and the older cars (2005-2012) are generally less complicated (and modular), but still relatively safe and not much heavier on fuel.

    Lighting control

Maybe look at Thread and ZigBee. I have a bunch of sonoffs, but shelly may also have products. The minis can fit 2 modules in a 2x4 light switch box, so 1-4 channels is possible. Both are open standards and you may already have a ZigBee coordinator/Thread Border Gateway in the house already (eg...

Are you signing up for Amazon Prime?

As much as I buy online, I'm still debating the price/benefit/value proposition. Currently my stance in terms of consumerism is to figure out whether I buy enough to benefit, and whether buying with delivery is cheaper/easier (recently had to replace sheer... cats) than just going to a brick and...

Day 5 no water Midrand surrounding areas

Necro time... My understanding is the main part of Rand Water's maintenance was concluded on Friday afternoon/evening. Saturday afternoon water pressure started dropping drastically. I get that there is lag because of reservoirs, but I feel gaslit when the updates say water is flowing.

City of Johannesburg achieved 0% on three core performance targets

The Rea Vaya thing I can fully understand. A UJ student I know was trying to use it and every day was a struggle of pay system issues, busses not showing up and an array of issues -- eventually just bought a cheap older car on auction and fixed it up. That was in 2023 (peak load-shedding)...

Home Affairs wants 50Mbps Internet at all offices within three months

What I have learnt is just go OTT.. at this point just get Internet: whether it is fibre (preferred), Microwave, WISP, LTE or high speed smoke signals. As long as the VPN ping is voice grade, with a mesh to major sites, 5-15 people sites in wet string is very doable. IE commodity internet where...

Review your computer's reliability and problem history (humour me)

The more I do actual work at work, the lower the score gets. Usually it starts dropping right after the weekend. At home I have to dig the Windows notebook out and dust it off -- usually to help someone over Quick Assist
