Vodacom and Netstar partner with WiTaxi ad-supported in-taxi Wi-Fi

The components used in this solution are not your standard wifi router that sits on your desk. Its a Quectel wifi module with a Quectel 4G module using a Quectel comms protocol between the modules. The SIM is locked to Netstar and the GSM module. You take out the SIM, it will refuse to work in...

Eskom CEO says debt relief, tariffs key to utility's survival

Maybe keep the power on so we (who still pay...) have more power to pay for. If I dont have power, my meter does not record power usage. No power usage, less income for you...

Telkom announces commercial launch of 5G network

The 5G networks currently uses the 4G as backbone or transport with 5G access loaded on top of that. Thats why you dont get 1Gbps (... can go higher 10Gbps is possible). Its cheating and not proper 5G in my opinion.

Andre de Ruyter's car was bugged with a "sophisticated" spying device

Stm32 low power microcontroller on U1. U2 looks like a accelerometer or IMU but cant tell really although it would make sense. The QR code is mostly done by ST on their components. The transceiver, U3, is confirmed as Texas instruments in which case its probably a CC1100 or part of that range...

Minister proposes timelines for shutting down 2G and 3G in South Africa

Most of my 2G IoT customers are migrating their 2G products to either NB-IoT or LTE modules because we know this switch-off is coming and we have been warning them. One customer who have migrated to LTE still have hundreds of thousands of units on 2G with a product lifetime of another 5 years...

Government to ban sale of 2G devices by February 2023

Couldn't have said it better @ system32 Most of the large tracking companies in South Africa use LTE based communication. 2G and 3G trackers have been replaced. South African MNO's will not use CAT-M1 only NB-IoT and NB2 (3GPP Release 14) can do medium speed tracking (tower handover up to...

Should DSTV be allowed a monopoly on broadcasting national sporting events?

If SA Rugby gets more money from SABC for the Currie Cup then let them have the monopoly back... In the mean time, I'll continue watching Supersport who made a payment to the sporting body to broadcast their sport on TV.

Challenges rolling out 28GHz 5G in South Africa

Does not really matter, 28GHz or mmWave tech cant go through window glass so why worry about it? You cant receive it in your house. The current tech has a working line of sight distance of ~1km from a cell tower. Highly populated areas might get it...

Will this prevent SIM swap fraud?

Wont work. As long as there are people controlling the procedure and entering data, it wont be stopped.

MTN 5G on my Laptop through Quectel RG501Q GSM module and then a shared hotspot to my phone (with the mybroadband app install). I guess the laptop's hotspot has some limitation... 5G is pretty much on par with other results I see in the forum
