Remote Database Access (lack there of)

Thank you. So a lot extra traffic you have to deal with when its public, I'm guess the password is solid to the brute force attempts aren't the real concern. It would be cool to know what the numbers are like for failed login attempts into the control panels as a comparrison. Edit: typo

    Should I learn MVC/Asp.Net?

Go For it! You can expand on your project and include web API in the same project along with SPA frameworks, you don't only have to use one at a time. Keep adding as your knowledge grows :D

Remote Database Access (lack there of)

Control panel or a database server, my point is about it being publically accessible. Therefore able to be attacked. I don't understand the IP whitelisting argument because anyone can log into their control panel from anywhere. Why does the DB access need to be IP restricted but the control...

Remote Database Access (lack there of)

Yes but I have a dynamic IP so if my IP gets automatically whitelisted when it changes then I'll no longer have access? By default, I don't believe IPs get whitelisted for access to these panels. If that's true then it happens in the background without the clients' knowledge and will break in...

Remote Database Access (lack there of)

I just made an account here and spun up a database, works great! Thank you for the suggestion. I still don't see why local hosts can't offer the same. I'm really not fully understanding the security argument. If the cPanel is able to be public then to me having the database public is the same...

Remote Database Access (lack there of)

True if it's online then it's open to attack just like anything on the internet but surely the same goes for the admin panels like cPanel or Plesk. What security do those platforms have that makes them more secure? Edit: It sounds like they're not actually more secure but just get attacked less.

Remote Database Access (lack there of)

When did it become the norm for hosts to no longer provide remote access to databases in South Africa? My recent experience 1-grid: No remote access. Absolute Hosting: Remote access through their openvpn. (yay) Axxess: Make use of a web-based database management tool. It would be nice to be...

A call to all people involved in software

I was going to answer but I can't since I haven't been apart of a change to agile, the places I've worked have already been using an agile methodology when I arrived.

    How to start investing

That's awesome! I never realised you had property, paying extra into your bond each month would be a much better option. 1000 bucks extra a month can take years off your bond. All the best!

Things I wish I knew about credit when I was younger

I can understand if getting a BMW is part of a business image you're trying to maintain to bring in high-end clients. But its a slippery slope, as soon as you let one thing slide, then the phone is far off either and it ends up snowballing. I'd prefer to buy a little cheapie and invest the extra...
