    I was quoted about 100k recently for a well known journal. SA unis pay about R20k of that and you are supposed to materialise the rest. The journals keep the copyright. You give them your hard work and have to pay them to publish it! Then we publish in local or African journals- and get classed...

    Especially Masters and PHD research. But the whole system is a scam if you think about it. From Open Source to having to pay thousands of dollars to publish in a reputable journal or your research doesnt count.

    I worked in a University Department in SA once and almost everyone was ex-UK. They stayed long enough for the passport and fled. All ex- NHS workers. Heard the NHS is a sh#t-show. They seem to all say that they live better in SA.

    I guess it depends. A weekend seems like it will be better to just take a package and avoid the stress- may even work out cheaper. We did quite a few days over Zambia and Botswana so our requirements were different and we wanted to be a bit more flexible.

    I have a suspicion that this is part of the scheme. Purchases from the US are easier to pass through surveillance. These are sophisticated swindlers.

    Yes. FNB blocked me from using my own account very well on vacation. That was a mission to get resolved and the card working again. I was stuck with access to one card. Why couldn't they be as efficient in blocking the transactions when dodgy transactions were going off in another country?

    They also have been trying to use it on booking.com. It's my FB account but there is absolutely nothing I can do about it. Facebook doesn't have a help centre or an email address to assist. You on your own.

    This is how I think they did it. Some time back my Facebook was taken over and the cellphone number and email address was changed. My fault. I can't even find that profile anymore if I search by my email address- but they can still use it to log onto apps. It's a glitch with FB. I didn't have 2...
