    Plug in Hybrids with enough EV range for the daily commute. Electric drivetrain no gearbox, with a ICE generator that is solely used to charge the battery.

    Yeah i'm at the coast and will drive the 1.6L no problem but again I like to just cruise. Look the handling and gear shifts on the Mazda 3 is so good you forget about the lack of power. You can wring it's neck when need be and stay at high rpm and you will enjoy it.

    Get the Mazda, it will be way way cheaper to maintain. Get the 2.0 if you can but the 1.6 is okay if you're a slow driver or it's your first car etc.
