SA smart lights that can be flashed with Tasmota

Just to add some experience here as I stumbled on this thread. I managed to flash the OpenBeken firmware onto some Qualitel LED bulbs I had (ALS08L and ALS09L) using tuya-cloudcutter. I opened one up and they use BK7231T chips (v2.9.15 firmware) and the SM2135 controller with the LED ordering...

Volkswagen ID.4 electric SUV will be tested in South Africa during 2022

Active Ethernet vs GPON - the price of fibre in South Africa

Uhm, unless you're referring to a different definition of the word, every single ISP and FNO and telco in the world contends or oversubscribes their network. Some may choose to do it in the access, or backhaul, or core, or combinations of the former, but every single one does it. Hell, you do it...

Active Ethernet vs GPON - the price of fibre in South Africa

For residential services, no one will do 1:1 - it will be way too expensive. However, from a layer 1 perspective on GPON, you can dedicate a portion of the 2.5G/1.25G to a specific ONT, which means you can actually do 1:1 if you wanted, but you'll have less bandwidth for the rest of the...

Active Ethernet vs GPON - the price of fibre in South Africa

Agreed. Depends on the area - no difference. There are some people saying maintenance in more on aerial, but these days people are just as likely to dig up fibre than they are to drive over the pole.

Active Ethernet vs GPON - the price of fibre in South Africa

If an FNO sells you a dedicated business service (not talking business class internet here) over GPON without dedicating that bandwidth, they are scamming you. You can sue them for false advertising if you experience congestion :). Business class internet is generally a bit different though -...

Active Ethernet vs GPON - the price of fibre in South Africa

You're right, which is why FNOs are hopefully already looking at XG(S)-PON to supplement their network once this inevitably comes. You can overlay it on top of GPON without affecting any of the existing clients and just connect the high bandwidth guys on the XGS-PON layer. I think at the moment...

Active Ethernet vs GPON - the price of fibre in South Africa

True, but the FNO also spent 80% of the money on the infrastructure, so it's in their interest to split and aggregate it just enough to be cost effective (you can't have Vumatel charge 2x the price of Openserve etc.), but also to ensure it does not impact customer experience (by the same breath...

Active Ethernet vs GPON - the price of fibre in South Africa

No, but I was making the point that you cannot say GPON by design will contend and congest. So I was disputing the claim about the technology. That said, your statement about FNO behaviour is true, but a separate topic. I could contend an AE network just as easily, and I can promise you that...

Active Ethernet vs GPON - the price of fibre in South Africa

Hehe, just because you CAN contend GPON doesn't mean you have to congest. If you design GPON properly, you'll monitor each port and if any come close to congestion, you can lower the split ratio where necessary, giving more bandwidth. Also, this guy needs to go look up XGS-PON and 50 GPON...

MateBook X Pro - Hands on

I imported the Gen8 model a year or so ago and it's an excellent Windows laptop. Screen (especially) , keyboard and touch pad are all great. I'm just disappointed they didn't innovate more with this revision. It's a carbon copy of the old one, except for the upgraded CPU and the 1TB SSD...

Huawei MateBook X Pro vs HP Spectre x360

Ironically, if that were the case, they would've compared the i7 version of the Huawei Matebook X Pro with the i7 version of the HP Spectre. Both have 16GB Ram and 1TB SSD as well. That would've been a more fair comparison. If I were Huawei, I wouldn't want to compare my i5 to another brand's i7...

New Huawei MateBook X Pro - South African pricing revealed

This is a bit sad. I have the 2017 version of the Matebook X Pro that was done as a grey import. Fantastic laptop (still using it with no complaints), but the only thing they have changed in this one is the CPU and storage size? This is Huawei after all, with $100b R&D, surely they could do...
