Think long and hard before joining a tax revolt in South Africa

“Any contribution to further a lack of law and order makes you part of the problem,” he said, adding that when you don’t pay taxes, it’s not the government that suffers, but rather the most vulnerable black in society that ultimately benefits from the government’s social programmes."

FTFY Mr. Kieswetter.

Boycott your municipal account..

Why is this so difficult for everyone to understand? Mass non-payment of muni accounts IS a tax revolt..

Of course there'll be inconvenience, we are fighting a hostile government remember, but it needs to be orchestrated, mass action, money goes into holding account, someone like Outa could facilitate, notify gov of intent so they know what its about, yeah its drastic but stop thinking that a tax revolt is going to be roses and fluffy bunnies one lazy Friday afternoin.

They can't disconnect everyone & they'll starve themselves of income. Government simply has to respond to such mass action, and it's a slight bit better than keeping on saying that we can't boycott PAYE. Munis are the government..

Good luck getting your services reconnected. Years ago when City of Joburg was billing anywhere from a hundred thousand to millions in electricity bills we got hit. We paid what we legitimately owed but was still cut off because we didn't clear an account of over hundred thousand Rand completely. The battle we had to get reconnected was something and a re connection charge. (Our electricity billing issues only ended years later when they installed a smart meter.) They did the same with the water later on, you think not have electricity for days on end is fun, wait to you don't have water for more than 24hrs. And we've had it at the same time when we haven't had water and electricity, we won't willing do that to ourselves. You want to be a martyr go ahead.

Personally I think VAT is the biggest income for government. As the rand spending power is getting worse, we buying less, so contributing less to the government thieving frenzy.

Financial emigration is the only real tax revolt that works and it's happening at an increasing pace.
The tax pie is getting smaller, and grant dependents are increasing in numbers.
It's all imploding in slow motion right now, but will accelerate exponentially soon.
There are better places to invest your skills and cash than this rotting dustbin of a country.

I do understand that. Not going to happen.

If it was possible to not pay rates and taxes, and all the service levies, sure. But I have no choice to pay for services that I use. I am 100% sure that COCT is going to laugh at a few neighborhoods refusing to buy electricity or water.
That's why it needs to be widespread. Sure they migth laugh when 50 households do this, not so much if it becomes a whole city or multiple towns..

Can be done, in fact rent boycotts have been done successfully by the ANC & is being done right now but not yet at scale, but won't happen if everyone thinks like you that its too much of an inconvenience.

You do you.. but then stop complaining when nothing changes 'cos you're not willing to do anything to inconvenience yourself mkay.

Many also worried about e-tolls but we just kept shredding those bills, ****em, but I understand not everyone has the fortitude (and balls) to rebel against injustice despite the risk & inconvenience. Why do you think they broke transport, transnet & SAA and electricity first, cos they knew they had people like you where they wanted.

As for hurting .gov by buying less lol, someone on here said years ago that even a failed state like Zimbobwe still provides enough for the elite to live like kings. Do you really think they care, have you learned nothing about the African way this last 30 years?

Oh stop your virtue signalling.
Non of your "initiatives" is worth anything or even remotely workable to affect government.
E-tolls was "easy" to ignore. SABC TV Licence is easy to ignore.

P.A.Y.E. and VAT is where the national government gets it money from. How are you going to implement witholding that Tax? Can you force your employer to not pay the P.A.Y.E. over?
Can you tell the shop/garage where you buy your food/fuel from to not pay the various taxes applicable?

@KatieKim has a point.

In the case of CoCT: That is local Government not the ANC national Government which steals faster than they can be caught. CoCT at least delivers services for the tax/fees they collect.

Not paying the municipality where you live is like cutting off your nose to spite your face.
It is a stupid idea and you will suffer the most.
They will even recover the money owned by taking from your Pre-paid electricity/water payments everytime you buy.

Which right minded person can afford to be without water and electricity in our modern society? You will die from diseases.

Not paying your municipal account is probably one of the dumbest ideas I have read on My-troll-band.
People just don't think things through.
The middle class - that is mostly the trolls on MyBB - has more to loose than anyone else. The poor/destitude are already in the shitter. The rich can just pull up and leave. That is the reality we are stuck with.

hmmm meh.

this will only work if big business gets involved

but imo. big business and the government are in the same bed. scratching each others back.

Yes you can force your employer not to pay PAYE over.

I might be completely wrong here, but can one deduct charitable donations to NGOs from their tax?

+1 for tax revolt , even for a month its time to teach the ruling party that being public servant means you serve the public , not that the public are your servants.

There have already been three tax revolts in South Africa:
Etolls, the TV licence and the boycott of the Post Office.

Eskom is next.

Good luck not paying your fixed "home user charge" and hiked fuel levy.
Oh no!
What is Eskom going to do? Cut the electricity that people are not already getting for 16 hours a day?

As for hiked fuel levies:

All I could say to the government is: have fun.

It is hardly easy to emigrate!
Agreed, its not easy. It's very expensive, takes a lot of work, stressful and emotionally difficult to leave family and friends behind.

That is why it is shocking so many people are leaving. You really have to reach a breaking point to uproot yourself like this. It isn't an easy decision even when money isn't a problem.

They have already been working on that, SOD remember?
