The Communications Worker Union (CWU) has claimed that the SA Post Office (SAPO) is going ahead with plans to retrench 6 000 workers.

CWU general secretary Aubrey Tshabalala said SAPO "dropped a bombshell at the doorstep of the union by giving a notice in terms of Section 189 and 189 (A), which means it intends to dismiss 6 000 workers."

It is only about a third of the total staff. It is not enough. They need to retrench at least 70% and close all loss-making branches across the country.

"Expect parcel delivery delays..."

I think it may only be companies still using the Post Office to send registered debt notices to clients in arrears. We toss them all away when they get delivered in any event. As for actual postal work, we use The Courier Guy or Internet Express to do all our pickups and deliveries.

I feel for the workers as poor management decisions has mostly led to these retrenchments.
However, the unions acting shocked is just too much.
They surely must have seen the writing on the wall?

Even Ukraine Post works better than ours. Just check the website.

Unions are part of the problem, not only in SAPO, but pretty much any SOE.

And then if that is not enough, they cause all sorts of kuk in the private sector

I feel sorry for the "good" workers if any are left. After my last visit to the Post Office to get an overseas AliExpress parcel that took 8 months to arrive and seeing the "I don't give a flying fck" attitude of all the employees in the Post Office, I am struggling myself to find any fcks to give about them.

I haven't seen the inside of a poeskantoor for over a decade.
Just came back from one, had to renew licence (it was expired so couldn't do it online)

Poor elderly lady in front of me was furious because they didn't have renewal forms, have to download them now

But yes, it does feel like you travel back in time when you enter a SAPO branch - in fact, you ask yourself, what did I do wrong to land up here

I cannot see that any branch is profitable as in my thinking the services they offer and the amount of people transacting wouldn't pay the water and lights.

I mean who would use SAPOS for anything apart from perhaps renewing a car/vehicle license and how much profit is there in that?

Close it all down and stop stealing the money!!

Agreed.
They couldn't even keep the social grant payments going.
Sad as it is, the only way now is to close it all down.
It will at least be one less drain of state resources.
