East London & Ciskei Border had better healthcare facilities in the 80's and 90's in my experience.
- Although Frere Hospital. East London was segregated into Black and White areas, the service in the Black areas was generally as good. My mom worked there for nearly 40 years. The big issue was the long queues. Interestingly, Black people had access to the White areas (accompanied by a Nurse) when a Doctor referred a Black patient to specialist clinics like Dermatology, Eye and Operations.
- Although nearby hospitals like Cecilia Makiwane Hospital (Mdantsane) and Day Hospital (Duncan Village) were substandard (due to Apartheid) compared to Frere Hospital in my experience, they were better than the Frere Hospital I have seen recently.
- Lastly, in my township, we had available Clinics for primary healthcare. Patients were often referred to Hostpitals by the clinics.
