It seems that every municipality wants to penalize individuals for owning solar.

This is what I don't understand. We pay for electricity we can't use, and now have to pay for electricity that we ourselves generate?
How did this even become a thing? The municipality is not going to provide maintenance on the solar system, yet they want money because they can?

I thought South Africa wants to get out of load shedding, but it seems municipalities want to capitalize on load shedding.

So with this in mind, is solar still worth it? For the last week or so, we saw a low flying helicopter surveying our area. It paid particular attention to homes that had solar installed. Why are we seeing all this activity?

Are you in the Cape Province ?

Municipalities and electricity is a fraught and complex issue in SA, mainly because so many municipalities depend on the high markups to fund general expenditures. It's a fundamental weakness in SA's post-1994 municipal financing regime.

Municipalities buy from the state-owned bulk generator (Eskom) and resell to retail customers after 120%-250% markup. Many municipalities are utterly dependant on their electricity profits to fund other non-electricity municipal expenses.

Until a new way is found to fund municipalities in SA, we will see these awful distortions in the market, such as the reluctance to get on board with solar pv.

Let’s just stop right there.

Show us how / where municipalities are going after solar users?
This! Municipalities at the end of the day are a business who "provide services" and they are going to be tracking the uptake of solar as it ultimately effects their bottom line.

I was the only house with solar in 2018 on my street, now there are atleast 5 homes with solar installs. That money going towards eskom or in my case city power is now gone.

IL bet you they'll bite back with their recent proeprrt valuations, atleast here in JHB

This is not the first nonsense thread you posted.

As said above about 30% of the municipalities revenue stream is from electricity so its a conflict of interest.

The problem is the swollen municipal workforce and the inefficiency.

They rely on the money and won't give it up without a fight.

SA is a socialist country and therefor self-suffeciency is punished. Australia is already 60% solar because it is a capitalist country so no blackouts for them.

Solar is still worth it now, just to help with blackouts, but as time goes by, solar owners will still pay for ANC and Eskom`s failures. You can see this by the fixed levies being introduced. In PE the muni upped a solar feedin levy by 260%. This will be the norm.

Was it this helicopter? Easy to see which houses he is paying particular attention to because of his big eyes.

@Benedict A55h0le are you and @Romy_ related by any chance?
CPT is using aerial photos to track solar panels, this malpractice has probably spread to other DA municipalities as well. Funny cartoon memes does not change this fact that you do not like.

Okay, so that proves you have no idea of what a socialist state is. Australia is probably the biggest socialist state in the world!

This in the cape? Jhb we don't give af
You don`t have the active DA social police wanting to forcefully disconnect your system and fine you by subtracting from your electricity purchases. People in CPT have no choice but to give af. DA/CoCT = socialist control.
