Roald Dahl books rewritten to remove language deemed offensive

Everyone knows only the bible cam be revised and rewritten.
To be fair, I don't know if it has ever been revised/rewritten. The original texts are still the original texts. It is the translations of these texts that are updated from time to time.

Of course it has.

Well I saw a clip of someone choosing to say fisherthem instead of fisherman. Gotta make sure everything is gender neutral.
It was Sam Smith.

So, have been thinking about this a bit...

My first thought was that changing a few descriptions might not make a huge difference but on reflection maybe it's not great to change the words the author used and intended. Rather put a disclaimer that this book is a product of it's time and the some words might not be as acceptable these days.

Weirdly enough, it was Blazing Saddles that made me rethink this. Blazing Saddles is probably the least PC movie ever, but I think that is part of what makes it impactful, and I certainly don't think it should be cut or changed for a modern audience. So yeah , @konfab and @Nike7 , I can certainly see your point and agree that the book probably shouldn't have been changed.

Roald Dalh himself made revisions to his works after some time and things changed.

I don't see the issue.

Authors revising their own work happens all the time, Tolkien revised the Hobbit quite a bit after it's initial release.

Someone else altering the work of a dead author...? Not convinced its something that should happen but I guess it's down to the estate of the author to approve or dissaprove of any changes.

The Bible and Star Wars.
Everyone knows that Han shot first.

The Bible is versioned, and everyone is aware of it. You quote the NIV and everyone knows what you are talking about. You quote the KJV and it is the same.

What these people are doing is akin to taking the Readers Digest version of a book and passing it along as original version. It doesn't work.

What do you think people pay more for? A first edition of a book, with all its mistakes and "outdated language", or a modern 2022 Readers digest version where all offending language has been edited out.

An author revising their own work is bad enough. Just look at JK Rowling and the mess she made with trying to retcon her books into being more politically correct. Like saying Hermine can be played by a black actress even through there is a direct reference to her skin colour in the books.

If the author is dead, it doesn't matter IMO if a publisher approves the changes or not, they are plagurising their work as the authors.

Off topic, because this like fairy tails have also been rewritten ie Grim etc but have folks watched , "A tale Dark and Grim" on Netflix? Wonder what they would think of that?
Adaptations will always take liberty with the source material. They say at the end: "adapted from XYZ"

That is fine with me, because they are not using someone else's name to pass off their own garbage interpretation of it.

It's not beyond the realm to think that he was not apposed to revisions, but that's the point up to the estate to decide if it happens or not.

Good points about the bible though. Apartheid, slavery, pogroms, massacres, vengeance. murder, you name it. As brutal as 'game of thrones'. Has it been sanitized yet? Not that I care personally, I tore my bible up long ago and will never read it again.
Did you hear about the jesus guy who condemned bad things ? He told you to love your neighbor.

99% of people will click buy now, and won't care if the book is edited or not. So this will be OK.

Books are managed by the deceased's estate, unless the author put it down in their will that no changes can ever be made then it is certainly not plagiarism. If the estate feels they can make more money, reach a wider readership by approving these changes then that is their right.

Netflix is terrible. I tried watching the Italian, "Poet" detective show. It's all woke garbage. About the struggle of a single woman to show that she's SUPERIOR TO ALL THE MEN IN THE SHOW (equal to men). Lots of money spent on costumes, props, CGI crowds but otherwise pure rubbish. Just not enjoyable because if I wanted to to watch a show about activism I'd watch an actual documentary.

Now it's OK to have that if they want but not for me. And sadly there are no shows, even with a female detective, who behaves like Columbo or someone else. There were shows like that made in the 2000s and 90s. Now it's pure garbage.
