MacBook Pro 14" M1 Still A Good Buy In 2023?

What do you mean Keychain not migrating?

Even if it doesn’t it lives in the cloud so that’s not a concern.

That being said I haven’t done a migration since Big Sur so wouldn’t know if it changed.

Odd if licenses don’t work because that used to be the best part, but they probably got greedy and tied it to the UUID of the drives.
Time Machine resolves the issue, and yes, iCloud Keychain is the other solution if it’s enabled for iCloud.

Really? My Application Support folder currently sits at 16.4GB. My Library folder at 49.88 GB.

Would be very interested to know what exactly is eating so much.

Probably one or two bad actors.

Turns out maybe half of the Application Support folder was from an application I deleted back in December - On1 Photo RAW 2022. I've removed it manually, and a few other things, and now have it down to 5.14gb.

Still, that crap would have stayed there forever if I just kept installing over previous installations, which, I'll be the first to admit, I usually do.

Yeah my original statement revolved around it being very easy to manage the left overs…much easier and faster than the efforts of clean installs.

They always live in the same place so minimal effort to manage.

Willing to bet it cached a lot of data there that didn’t need to be there and should have lived in a temp folder somewhere else.

With the availability of high speed internet, reinstalling the software you actually use, when you need it, isn't as time consuming as it used to be.

For sure.

It’s more the time and effort to customise things just right and back to the way you like it.

Even simple stuff like key repeat and trackpad sensitivity can take forever to get back to the right feel unless you specially took notes before nuking it…which in itself also takes time.

Just not worth it to me.

Interesting, why do those screen types give you migraines?
OLED and microLED use a technology called pulse width modulation (PWM) to regulate screen brightness. It doesn't have a backlight like a traditional LED monitor. The screen flickers on and off rapidly to create the appearance of a lower screen brightness. It affects a small percentage of the population. Explained better here: OLED Displays are giving me terrible migraines! (PWM Sensitive)

…So I finally got around to unboxing yesterday. 8 days after purchase. :X3:

As I opened the sleeve to expose the MacBook’s hinge side before pulling it out, I noticed a small imperfection on one of the hinges. Even though I’ll never see it, it would kill my OCD and I would never forget. To be fair, it should be perfect.

Without even removing the MacBook from the sleeve, I closed it up again and went straight to the iStore.

In the week I’d seen that Incredible Connection had also dropped their price to R29,999. With the added bonus of a 3-year warranty upgrade upon registration. Basically saving R2,999 against iStore’s iCare warranty upgrade. I had always wanted to buy from Incredible for this reason.

Thankfully iStore were very understanding, and just needed to unbox it to ensure it hadn’t been activated, before arranging a swap out. They had no stock, so I told them I’d be happy if they shipped one to me, and that I didn’t mind waiting. They said that would be difficult as it would have to be a new online order.

Knowing that Incredible had stock and that I would save R2,999, I took a gamble and asked if they would refund me.

No problem, funds back on my card, and off to Incredible Connection I went, to get the MacBook from them.

Will unbox later and register for the warranty.

My M1 MacBook Pro has been a boon for loadshedding, battery lasts crazy long even when taxing the CPU.

Yeah I must say I don’t take my charger to the office at all any more and it’s never been a dire situation where I need to lend a charger to make it through the day, except for one time I hadn’t actually charged it at home.

Great machine thus far. Took ages to set up due to ongoing Openserve & Frogfoot fibre issues in the Southern Peninsula.

Love the quieter keyboard and trackpad! And the screen's smoothness.

One thing I'm missing though are the dedicated keyboard backlight F-keys... What do you all do to work around this? I've added a keyboard backlight shortcut to the menu bar.

One other issue is that I can see the tops of icons on my Desktop behind Chrome when it's as high up as it can go... Any fix?

One of Apple's dumber moves. I also use the menubar but it's a pain.

What is it with South Africans and borrow and lend?

Lol yes, poor form, @SauRoNZA!

Re backlight keys...

Apple supports a official way to remap the old style by f5/f6 keys!

It was the first thing which i've changed on a new M2 MacBook. I have no needs for the original keymappings to microphone or sleep, so i found this solution is very handy if you know this keys from older Apple Devices and can live by the misslabled Keysymbols. Found this solution on Reddit¹

Create a new plist file in ~/Library/LaunchAgents named com.local.KeyRemapping.plist and add the code below. Save the file and reboot. F5 and F6 will now work as keyboard brightness up/down keys (after you log in for the first time after rebooting).

Fok weet.

Even I know better, but enough people around you keep cocking it up and eventually you also get it wrong.

Ironically I just corrected my daughter on this exact thing this morning.

Noticeable difference from the MacBook Air M1 ? I find the Air M1 sound really nice and loud, was pleasantly surprised.
Yes. The Pro 13” M1 was already a big step up from the Air M1.

AFAIK the Pro 13” M1 also has better speakers than the Air M2.

What display settings are you all using?

As for resolution/size, I was using Default and am now using More Space.
